Merritt’s New Command.
ST. PAUL, May 20.—Major General Wes-
ley Merritt yesterday relinquished com-
mand of. the department of Dakota and
left here last night for Chicago, where he
will assume command of the division of
the Missouri. General Merritt was sno-
cceded hereby General Brooks of Omaha.

Paper Mills Burned.
MILWAUKEE, May 20.———The Whiting
Paper mills, at Stevens’ Point, were burn~
ed yesterday, causing a loss of $500, 000.
Two Lives Stalled.

BERLIN, May 2d—Thlngs are once more
in a chaotic condition in Germany. The
two chief government bills, the'a'ntirevo-
lution bill and the tobacco tax ineasure,
have been crushingly defeated, and there
is no talk of substitute measures. It is an
Open secret that the views of the chancel-
lor, Prince Hohenlohe, and the Prussian
minister of the interior, Herr von Keeller,
clash on most subjects of importance, and
the existing situation cannot endure. The
latter's position is so shaken that his ten-
ure of office may end at any moment.
Prince Hohenlohe, who has been much
Worried for months past, Offered his res-
ignation immediately after the defeat of
the antirevolution bill, but he was per-
suaded to remain in office on the urgent so-
licitations of the emperor and his own
family.
Herr von Keeller‘s handling of the anti-
revolutlon bill is condemned on all sides,
but he has displayed a total disregard of
this dissatisfaction, and, in fact, strongly
urged before the council of state the im-
mediate introduction of Another ant-irevo-
lution bill directed exclusively at Social-
ists. Prince Hohenlohe quietly disproved
his arguments and showed the futility of
continuing the fight in the present reich-
stag. ~
The chancellor was supported in this
contention by Dr. Miquel, the minister of
finance; Baron Marschall von Bieberstein,
the minister for foreign afialrs, and Dr.
von Boetticher. the imperial secretary of
state for the interior, while Dr. Schoen-
stedt, the minister of justice. sided with
Herr von Koeller. Prince Hohenlohe‘s
views also met with favor in the bundes-
rath, with the result that no new antirov—
olution bill or tobacco tax bill will be in-
troduced, and an early close of the reich-
stag session is therefore expected. Ao-
cordlng to anticipations, the reichstag will
adjourn at the end of the month.
The Prussian Diet.
The bimetallists have laid a motion
similar to that adopted in the upper house
of the Prussian diet before the lower house
of the diet. It has been signed by over 200
members, chiefly Conservatives and Gen-
trists.
Members of the Center party introduced
a motion in the lower house of the Prus-
sian diet for the restoration of the clauses
of the constitution relating to the Chris-
tian church which were repealed in 1875,
but only the Poles supported it The
speakers of the remainder of the parties
declared themselves in opposition. to the
motion and declined to enter into its dis-
cussion. Thereupon the bill was put to a
vote and was rejected.
Owing to the enormous increase in the
price of petroleum, inventors are busy
throughout Germany trying to discover
substitutes for petroleum. and one new
lamp, in which raw alcohol is used to feed
an incandescentlamp, is being tested with
the view ofireplacing the petroleum lump.
Emperor William personally witnessed a
series of experiments with this lamp at the
new palace at Potsdam and pronounced
the apparatus to be calculated to achieve
the desired result. He also expressed the
hope that it would become the lamp of the
poor. being both cheaper and better than
the petroleum lamp.
Count von Kotze, on the personal order
of the emperor, has called off all the re.
maining duels h'eintended to fight against
his alleged traducers. Von Kotze will be
remembered as the master of ceremonies.

Krupp's New Armor Plate.
The revenue officers having discovered
that American bacon has been imported
into Germany in large quantities under
fraudulent declarations, a number of Ger-
man importers have been indicted at Go-
logne, Dusseldorf and elsewhere.
Tests have been made on a large scale at
Krupp's Works at Meppen with new nickel
steel plates, such as are intended for the
two ironclads built this year. The new
plates withstood all attempts to pierce
them, indentations only being observed}
under themost severe firing.
The epidemic of influenza which has so
long made Berliners sufler is at last dead.
There has been no case in this city of a
death from influenza since May 4.
Four dredges and seven tugs have been

which slipped into the Baltic and North
Sea canal near :Grunenthal on Wednesday
last, and large quantities of graVel are be-
ing’ brought to the spot in order to
strengthen the damaged parts of the banks.
It is now recognized that it is impossible
to obtain in time for the opening of the
fates which are to celebratezthe completion
of the canal works the stipulated depth of
9 meters; and so the contractors have been
ordered to get a uniform depth of 8 meters
throughout.
The imperial marquee at Holtman, in
which the gala banquet will be given on
the evening of June 21, will be a gigantic
affair. It will measure 120» yards in length
and will be 23 yards wide. This magnifi-
cent tent will accommodate 1,000 guests,
who will be seated at sin tables. It will
be an exact representation of the German
training frigate Nlode, and the masts and
rigging of that vessel will be utilized in
its construction.
Dr. Grace’s Big Score.
LONDON, May 20.—The famous English
cricketer, Dr. Grace, who is now 47 years
old, scored 288 runs yesterday while play-
ing against a Somersetshlre eleven. This
was the hundredth time he had scored 100
or over while playing in first class matches.
The feat excites unparalleled interest in
England.
A Brave Veteran Dead.
AMESBURY, Mass, May sad—Albert Bai-
ley, aged 5] years, died yesterday. He was
a member of the Fortieth New York (Mc—
zart) regiment during the lat-c war and
was presented a medal by congress for
bravery. .
