pistols was accidentally discharged
striking an Italian in the face, but not

About sixty members of Butler Lodge
paid'a visit to Wooster Lodge of that
town.
Stamford and Greenwich, were also
present and witnessed the working of
the second degree. A fine collation
was served after the work.
An unknown man notified officers
Hunt and Gladstone this morning that
they had had some trouble with a wo-
man in East Norwalkand thatshe had
shot him in the foot. He took 011‘ the
shoe and showed his foot to the officers
but it was merely scratched as if it was
done by a nail rather than a bullet.
Nevertheless the police are investiga-
ting the affair.
Harry Smith of South Norwalk came
'to the city yesterday and got very
drunk. ‘In the city court this morning
he was fined $5 and costs. Superin—
tendent Birmingham took an interest
in the man, who was of nice appearance.
He had the costs abated, paid the fine
and gave Smith enough money to go
home. The latter was very thankful
and left promising to send the money

several notes for $750 which is still un-
paid. For some time the club has been
disturbed by internal squabblcs, Which
culminated in the resignation of Presi-
dent Laughlln last week.
The Rogers Divorce Suit. _
LDNDON, May 8.-Thc suit of John "R.
Rogers for divorce from his wlfo, Minnie
Palmer, the actress. came up for a hear-
ing today before Justice J eunc, who, being
still suspicious of collusion, again ad-
journed the case. Mr. George Lewis, who
was Sir William Rose‘s attorney when
Rogers brought his previous suit against
his wife and made Sir William corespond-
ent, testified that Rogers demanded £10,-
000 damages. _
The Coroners’ Abolition Bill.
ALBANY, May 8.——In the assembly to-
day. when Mr. Stanchfield’s bill to abolish
the office of coroner was reached, Mr.
Alnsworth moved to recommit it to the
judiciary committee to amend by giving
the power of appointment of the physician
to perform the duties of coroner in the
county of New York to the court of gen-
eral sessions instead of to the county clerk.
The motion was agreed to.

tive Methodist conference, held here to-
day, passod a resolution to tho offcct that,
“considering the character of the Rev.
Jonathan Bell’s crime, the shame which
it brings to our faces, the sorrow to our
hearts and the sad publicity given to the
terrible facts, the conference cannot accept
his resignation, but expels him from the
“inlnlstry and connection. ”
