The Class of ’95 of the South Norwalk
High school gave a delightful reception
to their friends in Music Hall last
night. The floor and the balcony were
filled to overflowing. Smyth’s orches-
tra of seven pieces furnished music for
the nineteen dances. nearly all of which
were encored. Floor Manager Victor
W. Ferris, with his aids, H. Wilfred
Bodwell, Leo Davis, Charles Rodgers,
Clarence Hunt, and Frederick Baxter,
quickly arranged the sets and kept the
floor in perfect order. During the in-
termission of thirty minutes Caterer
Lane served dainty refreshments.
The city council met last night with
Mayor Lee presiding and all of the
members present. The minutes of the
last meeting were read and accepted
and bills amounting to $1942.33 or-
‘dered paid. A communication from
Douglass Fowler Post, G. A, R. re-
questing the usual Decoration day ap-
propriation was received and $50 was
appropriated. The clerk was author
ized to draw an order for $400 in favor
of the Electric Light Commissioner.
The resignations of Joseph Tammany
as water commissioner were received
and accepted. Permission was granted
the Tramway company to lay sp’ur
tracks to their new our house on Mead-
ow street. The clerk was authorized
to draw an order in favor of Chief
Baker to defray freight of new fire
truck when the same arrives. The
Water Commissioners were directed to
erect a hydrant on Elmwood avenue,
also to connect the water main on
South Main street with the main on
Meadow street and erect a hydrant
near the intersection. The meeting
then adjourned to May 20‘.

The Case of Dr. Buchanan.

ney General Hancock he had abandoned
the idea of putting Dr. Buchanan to death
on Wednesday.
Governor Morton will expire at that time,
but owing to the legal muddle the execu~
tlon, according to the opinion of the attor-
ney general, must be delayed till the courts
again decide the question raised by Bu-
chanan’s lawyers. .
A Clondburst In Kansas.
Haunincrox. Kan, May 7.-—-Herrlngton
Was visited by a cloudburst. The town
and surrounding country were flooded.
Lime creek. which has been dry fora year,
was converted into a raging torrent. and
houses, horses, cattle and hogs were swept
down stream. John Williams’ house was
carried away, and the family narrowly cs-
caped drowning. The house of. Samuel
Mchanus Was also carried away and wreck-

raphy, is announced. Mrs. Leslie Stephen
Was the second wife of Leslie Stephen. He
was first married to Harriet Marion Thack-
eray, younger daughter of William Make-
peace Thackeray, the celebrated novelist.
She died in 1875.

,PARIS, May 7.—Addltional advices rc-

river show that the Home lost 300 men,
including several important chiefs. The
French forces captured a number of pris-
oners, several guns and a quantity of pro-
visions. The French losses were only one
killed and four wounded.
Fire In a Hat Factory.
’ DANBURY, Conn, May 7.—Firo gutted
the hat factory occupied by the American
Hat company and William Moore of Grand
street today. The loss is $15,000; partial-
ly insured. The building was nearly con-
sumed before the fire department arrived.
The origin of the fire is unknown.
