ROCHESTER, May 7.—The funeral of Ag-
nes Sherwood. the actress and singer, wife
of Jerome Sykes of the Bostonians, who
died in New York last Thursday. took
place from the residence of her mother,
Mrs. B. Kenna. in this city, and from St.
Bridget’s church today. Mr. Sykes came
on from New York with the remains. The
deceased had been a mem ber of St. Bridg~
et’s church choir and had many friends

of a man found in an alder swamp was
identified today as Frank Lewis, aged‘45
years, a Biddeford Grand Army man who
disappeared five years ago. Lewis was

the original founders of the Chicago Trib-
une and one of the early pioneers of Cook
county. died at the residence of his daugh-

here has informed the minister of foreign

Germany, Japan has renounced its claim
to the permanent possession of the Llau-
Tong peninsula, including Port Arthur.
ST. PETERSBURG, May 6.——The Journal
do St. Petersburg says that Japan, in con.
formity with the advice of Russia, France
and Germany, renounces her claims to the
possession of Feng-Tien.
BERLIN, May 6.—-The Japanese govern-
ment has informed the government of Ger-
many that. in accordance with the advice
of the powers. Japan has relinquished her
claim to the Lian-Tong peninsula, under
the treaty Of Simonoseki.
France’s Progress In Bulldozlng.
TOULON, May 7.——-The French cruisers
Sfax and Cecilia will accompany the
French cruisers Tage andSuohet to China
seas today. They were loaded yesterday
with ammunition and provisions.
The Sfax is a steel and wood cruiser,
unarmored. of 4,502 tons displacement.
She carries six five ten guns, ten three ton
guns and three quick firing guns. She
was built in 1884 and has a speed of 16
knots.
The Suchet is a steel cruiser, unarmon
ed, of 3,430 tons displacement. She car-
ries four-16 cm. quick ,firing guns, four
10 cm. quick firing guns, four 47 mm.
quick firing guns and eight 37 mm.
quick firing guns. She was built in 1893
and has a speed of 20 knots.
The Tage is a steel cruiser, unarmored,
of 7,345 tons displacement. She carries
eight 10 cm. five ten guns, ten 14 cm.

The Cecilio is an iron and steel cruiser,
unarmored, of 5,766 tons diSplacement.

1888 and has a speed of 19 knots.
The Peace Ratification.
‘YOKOHAMA, May 7.—No Official notifl-
cation has been received here of the ratifi-
cation by the emperor of China of the
treaty of peace arranged betwocn China
and Japan, but reports from many sources
confirm the statements that the treaty has
been ratified. . ‘
Count Myogi, secretary general to the
Japanese council of ministers, has arrived
at Port Arthur and will proceed to Chefu,
where the ratifications of the treaty of
peace are to be exchanged.
Viceroy Li Hung Chang has been ap-
pointed Chinese envoy to exchange the rat-
ifications of the peace treaty, which is ex-
pected to occur at Chefu tomorrow.
Frequent cabinet meetings, which are
attended by all the Japanese ministers,
are being held at Kioto. -.
\Varships Assembling.
CHEFU, May 7.—The Warships of several
of the powers are fast assembling here.
The situation is regarded as ominous. A1~
ready eight Russian warships, including
three torpedo boats, have gathered here,
and more are expected. In addition an-
other British, French and American and
two German warships have arrived here.
French Opinion of the Trouble.
PARIS, May .-—The F igaro, comment-
ing on the situation of afioirs in the far
east, says today: “Although the situation
is grave, the bombardment of the Japa.
nese coast by the Russian and German fleets
is not expected. The negotiations do not
proceed easily. ”
A Probable Lie About Iii.
TIEN-TSIN, May 7.—The Chinese peace
envoys have left Taku for Chefu, where
the ratifications of the treaty of peace ar-
ranged between China and Japan are to
be exchanged on Wednesday. It is report-
ed that L1 Hung Chang has been degraded.
Important Meeting In Kioto.
YOKOHAMA, May 7.—-Tho Japanese
privy council and the head officials of the
government have been hurriedly summon-
ed to Kioto in order to attend a meeting
tomorrow at headquarters.
Five Persons Drowned.
FORT COLLINS, Colo, May 7.—Five per-
sons were drowned at Carsrude lake. The
dead are: Bay Badger, Denver, 10 years
old; Robert Craig. Fort Collins. 20 years
old, and a son and two daughters of H. C.
Carsrude. The party went out fishing in
aleaky old craft. Badger. becoming fright-
ened, tried to paddle to shore, and in some
way upset the boat, which contained seven
persons.
Big Blaze In Buffalo.
BUFFALO. May 7.—Fire today destroyed
M. Strauss & Sons’ tannery, postal station
A, Gro ben’s coal yard barns, several freight
cars. two dwallings. a number of. horses
and a large amount of stock in East Buf-
falo. The loss is estimated at $250,000,
with $125, 000 insurance. The fire started
in a barn in the rear of 789 William‘street,
and was well under way when first 'seen.

Death From Typhoid In New Haven.
NEW HAVEJ, May 7.——Burton Albert-
White, Jr., aged 22, of Brockport, N. Y.,
died today at the Yale infirmary of typhoid
fever after an illness of 25 days. His at-
