It is said that the letter writ-ten Sena-
tor Chandler by Rev. M. Beard of this
city, was the indirect cause of the de-
feat of the. Law and Order bill in the
.Senate, yesterday.
A trolley car struck an ice wagon be-
longing to Nelson Tuttle on Tuesday,
near Marshall street, but dld no dam-
age. The driver was at fault in turning
directly across the tracks in front of the
car.
The oyster eating season closed yes-
terday, as the month‘ of May, which
then came in, has no “r” in it, and tra-
dition and popular belief decree that
during the months lacking this letter
the oyster is not in a fitting condition
of palatableness.
Charles Hubbard, who was the Chef
at the Knob last summer, has leased
the Lassen place on Calf Pasture Beach
and on Saturday, May 11th, Will open
for the season. In preparing and serv-
ing shore dinners “Charley” cannot be
excelled and he will no doubt make a
success of his new venture.
The case of Mrs. Godson was re-
sumed before Justice Smith this morn-
ing. Mrs. Godson isfchargedzwith sel-
ling liquor ou Sunday. Attorney
Walsh, her counsel. entered a demur-
rer which was overruled and Mrs. God.

Confidence men and card sharps have
been detected plying their little game
upon the trains of the Consolidated
Railroad, and trainmen have ,received
notice from the superintendent to be
on the lookout for them. Their mode
is to strike an acquaintance with some
man upon the train, when a game of
cards is proposed and one or two others
are asked tojoin. The affable stranger
sometimes has a confederate in the
party and either he or his companion
proposes to play for a small stake mere-
ly in order to make the game interest-
ing—Stamford Advocate.
Mrs. E. H. Mathewson entertained
the Wednesday Matinee Euchre club,
last evening, at her palatial residence
on West avenue. The members and
their friends turned out in full force
and seven tables were filled with anx-
ions seekers after the handsome prizes
offered by the club. The playing was
spirited and the prize winners, when
announced at the end of the contest,
wgre jubilant. Mrs. Manuel T. Hatch
cliptured the ladies’ first prize and Miss
Hatch the second. The gentleman’s
first prize was won by Mr. Charles Di-
mond, but for the second prize there
were four ties and it was necessary to
cut the cards, which was done and Mr.
Oscar Banks proved the'lncky man.

served by the hostess, to which all pres-
ent did full justice. Among those pres-

Bishop White Consecrated.
INDIANAPOLIS, May 2.—The Rev. John
Hazen White was today consecrated bishop
of the Protestant Episcopal diocese of In-
diana. The service took place in St.
Paul’s church, which was beautifully dec-
orated r the occasion. The attendance
