Judge Robinson yesterday granted a
divorce to Mary Lee from Joseph Lee,

tolerable cruelty aud intemperance.

tailor, announces a new line of spring
and summer suitings, which he is pre-

ABach has been awarded the con-
tract to widen West street from Taylor
avenue to the city line. The bids,
which were opened at the city engi-
neer’s office, last evening, were: A.

Constable Samuel Ireland, returned
from Boslon, where he has been attend-_
in: the New England Kennel club ex-
hibition. The dog which he has been
training for Geo. E. Pierce, of. Provi-
dence was awarded the third prize.
This is the same dog that won the first
prize in the puppy class at the Rhode
Island State Agricultural fair last year.
Mrs. Joseph Jennings gave an enjoy-
able reception in honor of her friend
Miss Augusta .Learnard, of New York,
to the Friday Afternoon club and her
many friends, at her home on Fairfield
avenue yesterday afternoon. Miss
Learnard read an interesting story and
one of her many poems, after which a
delightful tea was served. The house
was beautifully decorated with cut
flowers and plants and the table set in
pink and white.
The Eolian society met with Miss
Helen Swartz, of Haviland street, yes-
terday. The following program was
rendered: Trio, “Graduation March,”
Grace Seymour, Alice Dayton and
Helen Swartz; song, “Sweethearts
Again,” Alice Byxbee; duett, “Wymann
Institute,” Jennie Rood and Naomi
Smith; recitation, “Contentment,”
Florence Kendall; duett, “Marchedes
Pompiers,” Eva Ferris and Ethel Keep;
piano solo, “May Blossoms,” Mabel
Illing. The next meeting will be held
with Miss Florence Kendall, of Wash
ington street, a week from next Friday.
Gilbert Newell held his twelfth an-
nual reception in Music Hall last night.
The hall was beautifully decorated with
flags and bunting and a large number
of people were present. The following
exhibition was rendered by the profes-
sor's pupils from Bridgeport : Solo
Hornpipe, Miss Flora Eddy ; The Maids
of the Mist, ten young ladies; High—
land Fling, Miss Sarah Stone ; We Two

and drill, eight tiny babies.

patch from Tokio gives additional details
of the treaty of peace, the principal fea-
tures ofwhlch have already Non published.
The treaty secures to Japan entire freedom
in the importation into China of steam
,engines and machinery for manufactures.
and the some privileges are accorded to
China in the matter of importing goods
into Japan. ‘
The treaty also grants to Japan extra
territorial rights wherein in the matters of
tariff and the dispensation of justice Japan
reserves every privilege. The indemnity
is payable in seven yearly installments at. 5
per cent. Payment of the obligation
within three years cancels the interest. In
addition to these provisions China engages
not to punish returned prisoners nor to in-
flict punishment upon Chinese who may
have furnished. supplies to the Japanese
army and navy. China ‘also binds herself
to return Japanese prisoners uncondition-
ally. The exchange of ratifications of the
treaty will take place at Chefu not later
than May 8. .
The Plague In Macao.
HONGKONG, April 20.—Many deaths are
reported in Macao. in the Portuguese set-
tlement in China, at the mouth of the Can-
ton river, as the result of the plague which
made its appearance there ' a short time
ago. The governor of Hongkong has re-
fused to establish a. quarantine against the
infected region, and what are called the
unofficial members of the sanitary board
have resigned. The general feeling is that
an outbreak of the plague here is probable
at anyfime.
