Governor McKinley In Hartford.
HARTFORD, April 10. —Tho McKinley
train arrived at 11:18. Governor McKin-
ley was escorted to the Allyn House and
after a light luncheon there to the capitol
by Senator Hawley. He visited the sen-
ate and house, where he was enthusiastic-
ally received. The house voted a recess
for 80 minutes. Many ladies were present,
and all shook hands with the distinguish-

strom school, defeated a nine from the
South Norwalk High school, yesterday
afteunoon, b'y ascore of 13 to 8. The
game was played on the lot' at the core
nor of South Main and Concerd streets.
James Hamilton and George Hale
will play an exhibition game of pool in
New Canaan to-night. The game sche-
duled to have been played in this city,
last night, was postponed on account of
lack Of patronage.- ' .
The Sentinel says, that It is reported
on what appears to be the best ofau-
-thority,[that Miss 'Bertha Burchard,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. Burchard,
of Wilson Point, and George McKay,
of Rowayton, were united in marriage
in Port Chester, last Tuesday.
The members of the .Darien M. E.
church held a special meeting Sunday
night and burned the mortgage against
the church. The original mortgage
amounted to $1,500 which they have
been several years In paying 01133700
of the amount having been paid this
year.
Joseph Weingartner, of Westport,
who threw a hammer at Claude Poy-
rez, a fellow workman in the Louns-
bury, Matthewson factory, and struck
him on the check, was brought before
Justice Smith, this morning, and fined
$5 and costs, which he paid and was
discharged.
At the New Haven shops of the Con-
solidated road there are being con-
structed four trolley baggage-cars for
the company’s new electric liné’in Mas-
sachusetts. The cars are thirty-four
feet long and will be somewhat lighter
than their regular baggage equipment.
They will be the first of the kind 'put
into operation.
As vice~paesident McKibben was
lighting the gas in the rear office of the
Tramway company, last evening, the
stop-cock fell out and the volume of es-
caping gas ignited threatening a' den--
gerous fire. He called secretary
Mansfield, who was in the front ofiice,
and the latter grabbed up a towel and
quickly soaking it with water extin-
guished the blaze before any damage
was done.
The Q. A. met with Miss Maud
Wheeler, of Havilund street, last even-
ing. Whist was the order of the even-
ing and after the game a dainty supper
was served. The players were the Misses
Eva Ferris, Helen Swartz. Emily Jen-
nings.Beula Jarvis, Olive Starr and
Maud Wheeler, the hostess, and Messrs.
Charles Swartz, Hubert Mitchell,
Frank Sherman, Homer. Byington,
Charles Trowbridge and Waldo Par-
sons. Theffirst priZeswere 'won by
Miss Olive Starr and Charles 'I'row-
bridge and Miss Eva Ferris and Charles
Swartz captured the booby prizes. .-
Tim Boyle and John Callihan, who
have been working on the new depot,
struck for higher wages, Monday, and
their employers, Thomas & Son,
promptly discharged them, Not re-
ceiving their wages as quickly as they
desired, they came to this city and em-
ployed Attorney Light to collect it for
them. Mr. Light sent Constable Ire-
landdown tothe depot and the money
was at once paid. He handed it over
to BoyleIand Callihan and they took
the first train out of town. They had
hardly taken their departure when the
coristable “was notified ‘that they had
skipped their board bills at Mrs. Corco-
ran’s house on Day street. As they
had escaped,~ Constable Ireland could
not arrest them. '

NEW YORK, April 10. -—Two elderly
French farmers, who arrived here yester:
day from Europe. whose names the police
record as John Clode and Lnrmond La-
papl, were found dead in their room in the

day, having been asphyxiated by escaping

Yokohama .to The Pall Mall Gazette re-
ports that the penco negotiations between
China. and Japan will be concluded within
a week. Seven of Japan’s eight condi-
tions have already been accepted. Cholera
is spreading in the infected ports.
