Steamer Buckeye—Passengers Escap-
ed Through \Vindows—Burning
of the Fine Iron Queen.
NEW WHATCOM, Wash. April 4.—Tho
steamer Buckeye, plying between this city
and Friday harbor, capsized in Belling-
ham bay, south of Eliza’s island. The
steamer left Anaoortes heavily loaded with
live stock and boy. A heavy southeast
wind carried her to one side. A heavy
wave burst into the cabin of the steamer
and turned her over on her side. The pas-
sengers were W. J. J onkins, W. Lasher,
W. H. Bennett of New Whatcom, and H.
Katzman and wife of Anacortes. All the
passengers climbed outside the window
but Katzman, who, Jenkins thinks. being
a large man, was unable to get out of the
cabin and must have been drowned. The
captain and four of the crew and all of the
passengers but Katzman, Bennett and
Lashcr got into a. small boat. Bennett and
Lashcr and the first ofiicor got into a. life
raft, which they tied to the steamer. The
‘ The Small Boat Landed.
The boat, after an hour’s hard work,,
reached the shore five miles below Fair
Haven. The captain secured a. horse and
rode to Fair Haven for a. steamer to rescue
those on the raft. As soon as the small boat
reached shore she capsized, and all were
so benumbed that Jenkins could not have
held out longer. The steamer J. Fl Boy—
den went to their assistance, but there is
no news of her return. It is probable that
Bennett and Lasher, who are well known
contractors of this city, Katzman, and the
first officer are drowned. The two large
lifeboats on the Buckeye were tied on,
and the crew were Izmllc to nntie them,
as they were partly covered with water, so
they had only the small boat. A heavy
wind was blowing, and from the condi-
tion of the survivors it is possible that the
others perished before assistance could
reach them.
‘ A River Steamer Burned.
POMEROY, 0., April 4,—Tho Pittsburg
and Cincinnati packet Iron Queen was
totally destroyed by fire at Antiquity, 12
miles above here, today.
CINCINNATI, April 4.—Tho disaster to
the steamer Iron Queen. reported from
Pomeroy, 0., has been confirmed bya dis-
patch to Superintendent Ellison of the
Pittsburg Iron Packet company from the
captain in command of the Iron Queen.
His dispatch simply says, “Boat total loss,
one chambermaid missing.” The Iron
Queen was the pride of the Ohio river.
She was built in Marietta in 1892 and was
valued at $60,000. She was insured in
Pittsburg agencies for about half that
amount. She was upward bound and had-
from 20 to 30 passengers aboard andu
good cargo of freight.
A Leaky Schooner In Port.
HALIFAX, April 4.—The Gloucester
schooner Virginia Wharton, from Glouces-
ter for Grand banks, put in today leaking.
One pump required to be worked con-
stantly to keep the vessel afloat. The
schooner has gone on the marine railway
for examination.

A Notorious Desperado Fatally Shot.
LOUISVILLE, April 4.——Mont Deskins. a
notorious dcspcrado and a partisan of the
Hatfields in the Hatfield-McCoy feud. has
killed his last man. He was fatally shot
by Deputy Sheriff N. P. Howard while re-
sisting arrest. During the feud a number
of murders were attributed to Deskins.
