NEW YORK, March 26.—-Tip seems to be a. fatal name for an elephant. After the notorious Tip became so obstreperous that he could no longer remain with the Barnum 86 Bailey circus. his name was passed on to one of the younger elephants. The new Tip at once began to live up to his name, but although often fractious it was not until this morning that he suc- ceeded in making a. record for himself. All the animals in the Barnum & Bailey menagcrie are now stationed in .the Gar- den. The elephants occupy one Of the sta- bles in the basement. Today Robert Ayres of 200 East Twenty-eighth street was sweeping the elephants’ stalls out with’n wire broom. When he reached Tip’s stall, the wire broom grazed against the ani- mal’s hind foot. The man’s back was turned to the elephant. Whisking his trunk around, the ele- phant seized Ayres and drew him in be. tween his tusks. It was evidently the animal's intention to drop the man in front of him and then trample his life out with his front feet. Tip, however, rejoices in the largest pair of tusks in the manag- eric. They measure exactly’ five feet, and as the elephant drew Ayres up between his tusks the man laid hold of them and yelled for his life. Head Keeper Newman and a score of trainers hurried to his res- cue. After flVC minutes’ hard work they succeeded in making Tip let go his hold. Ayros was unconscious when rescued. An ambulance was called, and upon examina- tion it was found that his left leg was badly fractured. He was removed to Belle- vue hospital. A hfarvelous Silver Strike. GUTHRIE, O. A four foot vein of silver bear- ing 300 ounces to the ton was struck in a. drill well . at 100 feet. Cody. alias Davin. alias Dalton, was found guilty of robbery and of being armed with a pistol in the superior court today. The punishment is life imprisonment. On Nov. 23, 1893, Cody robbed A. E.
