The freight traffic of the New York
division during‘January and February,
shows a large increase over the corres-
ponding months of last year. The in-
crease in number of cars amounted to
more than 50 per cent.
Rappo Simoneand Michael O’Brien
were arrested on Center avenue by
Chief Vollmer, yesterday, charged with
selling liquor without a license. At
Simone’sa half keg of beer and 33
bottles were found and at O’Brien’s
two kegs were discovered. The latter
claimed that he had purchased them t)
be used ata christening. This morn-
ing they both pleaded not guilty and
their cases were continued until Thurs-
day. _
Saturday afternoon Coroner Dotenji
came to this city to investigate the "
son of William Havens, who with his
sister Margaret, drank a quantity of
whiskey left in a pint bottle on the
table by the father. The investigation
revealed the fact that on Thursday
nightHavens had brought home a half
.pint of very bad rye whiskey which he
placed on the table in his room. Havens
claims that before he arose the next
morning the boy and his four—year-old
sister drunk the whiskey. In the after-
noon both children. were taken with
convulsions, the boy dying the next
morning ingterrible agony. Coroner
Doten said that his finding would prob-
Vably be that the boy had come to his
death through alcoholic poisoning and
that though the indications were that
the whiskey had been given to the chil-
dren the evidence was not sufficient to
warrant making the charge of criminal
carelessness. Margaret is still alive and
may recover.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 18.—When the
Fair will controversy came up in the su-
preme court, J 11ng Slack announced that
‘ he had finally decided to allow the execu-
tors of the estate to file their certified copy
of the'stolen will. In the future probate
proceedings this copy will take the place
of the stolen will.
An Actress Killed. .
PUEBLO, 0010., March 18.——A variety
actress. Fretta Compton, who had been
playing at the Standard theater in this
city. was shot and killed by her husband,
Matt Curtis, last night. Curtis, who gave
himself up. says his wife had just retired,
when he threw his revolver carelessly on a
trunk beside the bed, and it wont ofl.
McDade’s Long Tramp.
LONDON, March 18.—'C. W. McDade of
San Francisco arrived in London yester-
day. He is walking around the world and
will commence a pedestrian tour through
France today.
