As Cavanagh’s truck, loaded with

and another one had to be sent for.
The L. S. whist club met with Mrs.
Russell Frost yesterday afternoon. Mrs.
James Golden won the first price and
Mrs. Charles T. Raymond the second.
In the game of pool at Stamford last
night, between P. Welsh of that city
and John Mdranof New York, Welch
won by a score of 200 to 126, James
Hamilton of this city refereed the game-
James Scofield, who resides in the
north part of the town, will go into the
milk business in South Norwalk. He
was in the same business there about

The Union Veteran Union met with
G. S. North last night. The reports of
of the several committees were read
and accepted. It was decided to hold
their next meeting on the 29th., in
the old rooms of the Mystic Chain
lodge.
Joseph N. Belde n, of Bridgeport, has
sold to Charles H. Wolfe and James
H. Seeley, also of that city, a large
tract of land, together with the build;
ings and appurtenances thereon at Bell
Island. The property is bounded by
the property of Foster Brothers of
Danbury. To what purpose the land is
to be utilized has not yet been made
public.

A Land—(3211111 Tragedy.
' GUTHRIE, O. T., March 16.—The con-
test ovcr claims in Washington county has
resulted in another tragedy. Cyrus Cowan
and John Coleman had frequent quarrels.
Cowan was attacked by Willie and Pete
Coleman and sustained a fracture of the
skull from being hit with a. rock. He
turned and shot and killed Willie, aged 16,
and. fatally wounded Pete Coleman, aged
21.
Utah’s New Constitution.
SALT LAKE CITY, March 16.-—-A large
number of propositions was submitted to
the constitutional convention and referred
to appropriate committees. A petition of
the woman suflragists was received and
referred. Two propositions relating to the
taxation of mines were submitted, being
taken from the laws of Montana, Nevada
and Colorado.
Militia at a Trial.
WINCHESTER, Va, March Iii—The trial
of Thornton Parker, the negro charged
with assaulting Mrs. Melton, a. white wo-
man, is proceeding quietly here, though,
on account of tho cxtcnso excitement and
threats of lynching made by the whites
and counter threats made by the negroes,
the militia was called out.

ALBANY, March lit—Senator Pound in-
troduced in the senate today a bill pro-
viding for making more stringent the cor-
rupt practices act by extending the act to
caucuses and forbidding any candidate of-
fering compensation or other advantage to
any person attending one.

PHILADELPHIA, March 16,—At the solici-
tation of Charles H. Cramp, Miss Frances
E. Griscom, daughter of Clement A. Gris-
com, president of the International Navi-
gation company, will cliristen the big pas-
senger steamship, the St. Paul, on March
