hotel by Mr. Donovan on the recently

officer gathered it' in and now has it as
a trophy."
Chief Vollmer was called to the heme
of James Powers on Cedar street, this
morning, to remove John Powers, a
son, who is demented. When the
Chief "reached the house he found‘that
young Powers had driven the family
the place. The floors were covered
with pieces of broken china, furniture,
etc. Drawing. .his. club, the Chief
bravely entered the house in quest of
young Powers. who had threatened to
kill anyone who entered. He was
found in the sitting room and quickly
overpowered and handcuffed. He was
then removed_to the station house
where he now is. It is probable that
he will be taken to some retreat as
soon as arrangements for his reception
can be made.
Carlton Cornwell, foreman of the Gazette,
Middletown, N. J, believes that Chamber-

cited over a. lively runnibg fight between
an officer and a number of miners and
former railroad‘mcn, in which one man
was killed and another badly injured.
Constable Frank Leupten had arrested a.
man named McQuadc at Victor for par-
ticipation in the railroad strikes last sum-
mer. A number of his companions ob-
jected; and in the melee one man, S. Ral-
ston, was shot through the check. The
constables finally got Ralston and Mc-
Quadc before a Justice of the peace, where
they were put under $200 bonds.
They refused to give this, and Leupten
accordingly placed his prisoners on a. train
to bring them to Cripple Creek, but
with guns, preventing the train’ is depar-
ture. When the constable approached the
locomotive, the engineer jumped off and
ran.
after going a mile was stopped ostensibly
to let 011' passengers.
a couple of other men attempted to enter
the rear car, where L'cuptcn and his ofii-
cers Were. Leupten grappled 'with Looney,
and as he was losing ground pulled a gun
and fired. Looney was instantly killed.
The prisoners were safely landed in ,jail
here without further incident,_but serious
1 trouble is expected tomorrow.
