Alfred Wilmot, president of the Jun-
ior Prohibition Club, entertained the

Spring street. The evening’s entertain-
ment consisted of a box sociable,
The hearing in the Hamilton remon-
strance case, which was to have been
heard this morning, has been postponed
until February 9th, as it was impossi-
ble for the attorneys to be present.
Mrs. Tallmadge Baker entertained the
Friday Afternoon Whist club. yester-
day. Mrs. Frank Leonard and Mr. M.
H. Parsons won the first wives. and
Mrs. Russell Frost and Mr. C. ’l‘. Ray-
mond the second.

meeting of the legal voters of the City of Nor-
walk will be held at the Town House in said
City on the first-day of February, 1895, at 8
o'clock p. m. to authorize and direct the water
commissioners of this city to purchase. if a
satisfactory price can be agreed upon. and if
not to take, by proceedings to condemn, ap-
praise, assess, and pay all damages, for the
taking of all the rights of the Union Manu-
facturing Company, of Norwalk, the assignee
in insolvency of said Company, its stockhold-
ers and all other persons interested in the
property of said Company. and the rights Of
all other mill owners and other persons, in and
to so much of the water of Norwalk River. :0
called. as comes to said river from above the
south line of the premises of said city at
Grupe’s Dam in New Canaan, and to make
the necessary appropriation therefor.

Be it ordained by the Council of the City of
Norwalk:
That Section 1, of Chapter XXII, of the Or-
dinances of the City of Norwalk, is hereby
amended by inserting after the word “direc-
tion” in the second line of said section, the
words: “of the chairman of the highway com-
mittee, and” so that said section. when so
amend ed shall read as follows:
SECTION I. It shall be the duty of the Com-
missioner of streets and sidewalks, under the
direction of the chairman of the highway
committee, and of the Council of said city, to
cause to be made. repaired. cleaned and kept
open, and safe for public use and travel, and
free from encroachments and obstructions,
. the stretts, sidewalks, gutters and public
gr minds and places in said city; and he is
hereby given full power and authority to do
and cuu~ e to be done and performed all neces-
