Charles L. Moore, one of the recognized
leaders of the Addicks faction, is sanguine
that his candidate will be nomintaed. He
even goes so far as to state that Senator
Higgins has no more show of being the
caucus nominee than he (Moore) has. Sena

ator Robert J. Hanby of Newcastle coun-
ty, who, by the way, is the only man from
that county who will vote for Addicks, is
not so positive of success. He said today
that it was a pretty fight between the two,
and the race is nip and tuck. Neither
Hanby nor Moore would listen to the sug-
gestion of a compromise candidate.
.The followers of Mr. Addicks say the
report that the caucus was to have been
held last night originated with the Hig-
gins men. They claim that it was a piece
of strategy on their part to attempt to
draw out the strength of their opponents.
SenatOr Higgins’ lieutenants. of course,
ofi‘er a vigorous denial to the statement.
Mr. Moore says there is scarcely a possi-
bility of Mr. Addicks’ defeat. He states
that he will be nominated on the first,
second or third ballot.
On the other hand, Mr. Higgins’ man-
agers state with apparently the utmost
confidence that there will be but one bal-
lot, and this will show a substantial ma-
grity for the senator. One Of Senator
iggins’ most ardent supporters stated
today that Mr. Addicks will not have
, more than five votes at the outside and in
all probability not more than four.
Sewell Versus Murphy.
TRENTON, Jan. 0.—The oflice seekers
are here by regiments. Every part of the
state is represented by the gentlemen who
are anxious to serve the state for pay and
emolument. Naturally the chief interest
centers in the contest for the United States
senatorship. The candidates have opened
headquarters, General Sewell making his
manders, to indiscriminate massacre, car‘
ried out with every revolting circumstance
of primal barbarity. Groups of prisoners
tied together were riddled with bullets and
then hacked to pieces. Boats crowded with
fugitives of both sexes and all ages re-
ceived volley af‘. er volley. The streets were
encumbered with corpses showing every
ghastly form of mutilafion which oriental
cruelty has invented. ‘
_ “What perhaps is the strangest thing of
all, showing the total, even if temporary,
disappearance of European veneer, is the
absolute unconsciousness shown by the
Japanese officers of the effect of these
brutalities upon western visitors. At Port
Arthur, after real fighting and real provo-
cation, the artificialities of Hiroshima dis-
appeared like snow in the sun.-
“It recalls the fable of the cat changed
into a beautiful Woman, and who played
the part to perfection until, in the midst
of a banquet, a. mouse was allowed to run
across the table. This appeal. to funda-
mental instipcfs proved too much for la-
boriously acquired habits. The woman
disappeared, and the cat stood revealed.”
Oyama and Officers Blamed.

rests not with the Japanese peasant, whom
everybody knows is a lacquered barbarian,
but with Marshal Oyama and his officers.

Korea Declared Independent.
SHANGHAI, Jan. 9. ——A correspondent at
Seoul telegraphs that the king Of Korea
proceeded to the ancestral temple and
there formally declared the independence
of Korea. He was accompanied by the
members of the cabinet and the other high
functionaries of the government. The
royal party was escorted by a body of sol-
diers armed and equipped in modern style.
Ministers Bokuyeiko and J okohan were
specially guarded by Japanese policemen,
and the streets were kept clear by the new
Korean police. A correspondent at Fusan
Ken, in southern Korea, have seized and
beheaded three of the principal leaders of
the Tonghak rebels. The Tonghaks are
pursued by Korean soldiers, and in conse-
quence of the death of their leaders the
rebels are fleeing in all directions.
