Lord Dunraven’s Challenge Received
by the New YorkYacht Club;

stitute Challenge Will Be Sent.
NEW YORK, Dec. iO.—-The Earl of Dun-
ravcn, rue to his promise, has challenged
for the America’s cup, and yachtsmen and
sporting. enthusiasts will have the pleas—
urc Of witnessing a race in New York wa-
ters next fall between his yacht Valkyrie
and the best boat that can be built—and
tho Herreshofis will probably build it—in
this country. Lord Dunraven’s challenge
was cabled to J. V. S. Oddie, secretary of
the New York Yacht club, last Wednes~
day, but it was not made public until last
night, as the committee was waiting for
a. letter from the Earl of Dunraven which
arrived. on the Cunard liner Campania
yesterday.
Several wild minors were spread last
week to the effect that the Earl of Dun-
raven would not challenge for the cup, as
the concessions which he asked for in his
letter to the America’s cup committee had
not been granted. Several concessions
asked for were granted, but there were
one or two which the cup committee did
not see fit to concede. Lord Dunraven
wanted the course over which the race
was to be sailed changed from off Sandy
Hook to the course 011' Marblohead, but
this the committee flatly refused to do.
The challenge sent by Mr. Grant, scorc~
tary of the Royal Yacht squadron, on be-
half of the Earl of Dunravcn is as follows:
Oddie, New York Yacht Club, New York:
I am requested by the Earl of Dunraven to
forward you a challenge for the America’s cup
on the terms and conditions of the challenge
sent by me on his behalf on Nov. 25, 1892, but
subject to any modifications t'as to dates,
courses. starts and other details which may be
agreed to between Lord Dunraven and the
committec appointed by the New York Yacht
club to conduct negotiations and arrange all
details. I therefore, on behalf of the Royal
Yacht squadron and in the name of the Earl
of Dunraven, a member of the squadron, chal-
lenge to sail a series of matches with the yacht
Valkyrie against any one yacht or vessel con-
structed in the United States of America for
the America’s cup.
The following are the particulars of the chal‘
lenging vessel, namely:
Owner, the Earl of Dunraven; name of yacht,
Valkyrie; length on load water line, 89 feet.
Custom house measurement will follow as soon
as the vessel can be measured for registration.
I should be much obliged if you would cable
me on receipt of this challenge and let me have
a reply by letter as soon as the matter has
been laid before the committee.

Lord Dunravcn, in his letter, says:

,SIR—I have the honor to acknowledge the
receipt of your letter of the 15th inst. advising
mo of the appointment of your committee and
replying to my letter of Oct. 25 to Mr. Oddie
on the subject of a challenge for the America
cup. -
In regard to your remarks concerning the
proviso in paragraph 3 of tho challenge issued
on my behalf in 1892, without expressing any
opinion, I must point out that the club issuing
the challenge can alone have power to deal
with such a matter. and that, if it be referred
to the Royal Yacht squadron, it is quite im-
possible that their decision, whatever it may
be, could be obtained in time to insure a match
next year.

challenge identical with that of 1892. If you!
committee are unable to accept such a chal-
lenge, it is quite certain that no challenge can
be sent, but in the hope that I may not be thus
debarred I proceed to consider the other points
mentioned in your letter.
Lord Dunravon then says that he is in
favor of the races as far as possible being
to windward and leeward and suggests
the insertion of some provision to the of-
feet that if one of these races is started
down wind and either vessel fetches back
without a tack that race shall bevoid.
Ho regrets that the races cannot be sailed
ofr‘ Marblchcad and would prefer a. one
gun start, but leaves those matters to the
New York Yacht club: Lord Dunraven’s
letter then says:
I am glad that your committee will recom-
mend that an original challenge may be with-
drawn and another substituted. subject to the
conditions Incnrionod in your, letter. As to the
ten months’ notice». I must request your com-
mit-tee to waivo this to the extent of accepting
anot-ice of eight instead of ten months, the
exact date Of the first race to be settled later
on. Sailing in October, or even late in Sep-
tember, makes it vr-ry late .in the season for
bringing a vessel home and may inflict such
great inconvenience to a challenger that I
would not undertake to do it.
The only questions requiring a speedy am
swer are:
First—Will the committee accept the chal-
lenge, identical with my challenge of 1892?
Second—Will they consent to shorten the
term of notice to the extent I have requested?
As I shall have to build, fit the vessel out three
times and cross the ocean, time is of great im~
portance to me, and I Should feel greatly
obliged if you will cable me the decision of
your committee on these two points.

The first meeting of the committee Will
take place today, and a special meet-
ing of the club will be held probably on
Thursday. Until then no answer Will be
made to the queries Dunravcn has sub-
mitted.
The exceptions Dunravcn takes in the
letter above quoted have boon fully dis-
cussed and practically agreed upon in the
place. The reference to substituting a new
challenge for the present one means that
it is Dunravcn’s plan to have two yachts
built—one by Watson and one by Fife.
The present challenge names the Watson
boat, the new Valkyrie, as the challenger.
But in the event of the Fife boat proving
the faster Dunraven will, by the present
agreement, have the liberty of withdraw-
ing the present challenge and the Val-
kyrie, substituting a .new challenge and
the faster boat in its place, even at— the
eleventh hour.
n. Utah’s Indian Troubles.
West left for Moab, a settlement near the
scene of the threatened Indian troubles,
Friday night. The conflicting reports re-
ceived caused him to decide to make a
personal investigation before calling out
the militia. It is probable that he will see
several of the Indian chiefs and learn
whether they refuse to return to Colorado.
