ent Byrnes has not assisted as we think
he should have done in the police investl.

This was what Frank Moss, assistant
counsel to the Lexow committee. said
when asked today what disposition he
thought should be made of the police su-
perintendent. , .
Continuing. Mr. Moss said, and he
wished it to be distinctly understood that
he was speaking for himself alone:
“Superintendent Pvrnes- did not ap-
prove of the investigation from the very
beginning. How persistently he objected'
to an examination of the department is
shown by the attacks he made on Dr.
Parkhurst. When he found the depart-

ment in a hurricane. he immediately be-
gan to trim his sails to the wind. ~But to
let Byrnes remain for that reason would
not be fair to others who are in the same
position. He wheeled about simply be-
cause of his ingenuity, and the mere pos-
session on his part of that ingenuity
ought not to operate in his favor.
Responsible For His Own Regime.
“It would be decidedly unfair to men
of lesser brains to allow him to remain
on that ground. He has been responsible
for his own administration.
“Of course the fact that Byrnes is the
executive head of the police department
will not operate in allowing the others to
remain, and why should it operate in his
favor?
“The police commissioners were his
employers, and they are jointly responsi-
ble for his inefficient service. ”
“Will the committee recommend any
legislation bearing upon that point?” Mr.
Moss was asked. »
“I can say nothing as to that. " was the-
reply. “The Lexow committee will re-
sume its sessions on Nov. 26. That has
been practically settled unless Mr. Golf’s
illness makes it impossible. At present
Mr. Goff thinks that he will be able to
take up the work again on that date.”

At a meeting of the Parkhurst society
the following officers were elected for the
ensuing year: President. the Rev. Dr.
Charles H. Parkhurst: first vice president,
the Rev. H. W. MacCracken: second vice
president, Judge William H. Arnoux;
treasurer. Edward A. Nowell; secretary,
T. D. Kcnnesou.
A letter was received from ex-Judge
Noah Davis, stating that while he could
not be present he rejoiced over the work
done by the socicty.
' He referred to the present as the most
important period in the history of the so-
ciety and added that in its_cxaitation he
hoped that it would not forget wisdom in
the future. "
“Crime,” the letter concluded.‘ “ ‘ye
have always with you,’ and nothing but
vigil and prudence are equal to its re-
straint. What shall be done to the fruits
of what has been accomplished and to
wisely increase them are subjects of the
highest moment. ”
Chicago Sports Arrested.
CHICAGO, Nov. 17.—-Twcnty~two em-
ployees of the Hyde Park and Chicago
Beach hotels, who were attending a prize
fight in the barn of the .vl-mer hostelry,
with the two principals in the fight, were
arrested by the Hyde Park police. The
fight was for $50 a side and the champion-
ship of the two hotels. whose employees
are bitter rivals in ring afialrs. Charles
Cartwright and George H. Payne were
the pugilists.
