tain range, lying from 100 to 150 miles
north of Tokio, the chief city of Japan.
On the day mentioned it was literally
”rent in twain” and “blown off the face-
of the earth” by the expansive poWerr of
steam which had generated within it.
From the earliest times of which there is
any record streams of cold water'had been
plunging under the peak on one side and
escaping in the shape of steam and boil-
ing hot water on the other. , .
That the “escape valve” was not suffi-
cient to let off all the, steam generated in
the passage of the water through the red‘
hot interior ,of the peak is evident, because
of the fact that when the pressure became
too great the sides of the mountain yield-
ed, just as a boiler would have done un<
dcr like. circumstances, and an immense
explosion was the result. The explosion
is said to have been heard a distance of ,
over a thousand miles and to have caused
’absolute darkness in the vicinity of the
exploded peak upward of three hours,
during which time perfect torrents of hot
water and mud were poured down from
the immense heights to which they had
been hurled by the force of the “pent-up
furies," which caused the disaster.
The debris which fell after the explosion
covered an area of about 44,000 acres, to a
depth varying from 10 to 100 feet on an
average, and in one place, where a beauti—
ful valley had existed but a. few hours
before, rocks and mud were piled up' to
the height of 900 feet. Three villages
were ingulfed in the ruins, and at least
500 inhabitants killed by falling debris or
drowned and cooked in the torrents of
boiling mud, which flowed down the val-
ley to a distance of nine miles. These
facts were gleaned from a report made by
a visiting committee appointed by the
University of Tokio.

Interesting Items of a Half Dozen Nota-
ble People.
For over thirty years the Archbishop of
Canterbury has prohibited the delivery
of letters on Sunday at his country house,
as he will never trouble his mind by
reading one on the seventh day.
Mme. Patti has decided to spend the
winter in Europe, and has acceptedan
offer made by M. Lofan, director of the
Opera House at Nice, to take part in four
special stage representations of opera at
that theatre after the New Year.
Enoch Pratt, of Baltimore, who is
in vigorous health at 86, and the active
head of several large corporations,
wanted to give Baltimore a library, and
so has spent $1,300,000 without troubling
his heirs with the business.
Mme. Bazaine and her family are in the
direst poverty. The last resources of the
Marshal’s wife Were spent in an attempt
to recOVer from the Mexican Government
her property, which had been confiscated
byv President Juarez on account of her
marriage.
An authority in an English magazine
gives as his opinion that the five greatest
living writers of- fiction are in the order
named, George Meredith, Thomas Hardy,
James Barrie, Robert Louis Stevenson
and Rudyard Kipling. He says these are
clearly entitled to the ranking, but is
undecided as to who to put next.
Those who have liked to think of the
beautiful, flowery home on Appledore
Island that Celia Thaxter loved and cared
for so devotedly will be glad to know that
so long as her relatives live the garden
will be attended as she had attended it
for years. Her grave, which is within
sound of the sea, is piled with flowers
and shrubs every day" by her friends
and by the summer pilgrims who visit
the island.
Invisible Writing, and Its Uses.
Writing with rice water, to be rendered
visible by the application of iodine, was
practised successfully in the correspon-
dence with J elalabad in the first Afghan
war. The letter was concealed in a quill.
On opening it, a small paper was unfold-
ed, on which appeared the single word,
“Iodine.” The magic liquid was applied,
and therewith appeared an important
dispatch from Sir Robert Sale. In the
course of a trial in France last year a let-
ter was read from Turpin, under sentence
of five years’ imprisonment as a spy, giv-
ing directions to a friend with a View to_
establishing a secret correspondence with
him while in prison. This led to an ofll—
cial inquiry on the subject’by the French
authorities, and some strange revelations
were obtained from some of the convicts.
It came out that when information was
to be conveyed to a prisoner, a formal let:
ter. containing apparently nothing but a
few trivial facts of a personal nature, was
forwarded to the prison. This was read
by the governor, who stamped it, and al-
lowed it to be handed on to the man to
whom it was addressed. The latter, how—
ever, was aware that there was another
letter to be read between the lines, writ-
ten in milk, and easy decipherable on
being rubbed over with a dirty finger.

fellow who is using ten ,cent’s worth of
their real estate and doing no harm to
anything? I guess not._ .You can stay in
this country as long as you like.”
