never to be fully depended upon ‘ to keep
up the unanimity of the skirt and bodice,
no matter how carefully they are adjusted.
Green and brown are a favorite combina-
tion at present, while green and all shades
of rose make a brilliant showing in all the
milliners’ windows. Fade colors are at a
discount this season, the purest and most
brilliant tints being preferred.
Long redingotes of cloth or velvet per-
fectly out are the height of fashion for
winter wear. The material must be of
the best for these garments, the elegance
of which is unquestionable.
A great deal of fur will be worn as
trimming and in the: form of ornaments
and accessories, such as collars and boas,
but entire jackets of for are not fashiona-
ble.
Princess robes hold an important place
among winter novelties. The one of which
an illustration is given is of old red cloth
trimmed with beaver bands' and beaver
colored velvet. The sides and front of the
gown are out like a corselet, closing at the
left side with large covered buttons. The
skirt is trimmed with bands of fur, form-
ing points in fronts. A triple collar or
epaulet bordered with fur cover the
shoulders, from which descends on each
'side of the front a full scarf of velvet,
Which terminates beneath the corselet.

NEW COLORS AND COMBINATIONS.
‘ Royal Blue Is Added to the Brilliant
Shades Already Worn.
Among the new shades that we are to
expect is a very pronounced tone of royal
blue. It is described as being harsher even
than the tint to which we became some-
what accustomed in the early part of last
autumn. French milliners have a way of
subduing and toning down these vehe-
ment colors by adding black in great quan-
tities or perhaps a darker shade of the blue
itself, but we, being less advanced in the
science of colors, forget these palliatives
and inflict the crude shade without the
condonation afforded by such propinquity.
It is almost certain that a great deal of
black will be worn in the autumn and

Winter, not only in dresses, capes, coats
and mantles, but on bonnets and hats.
A great many new ribbons are made with
a satin border in acontrasting color, black
frequently forming half the ribbon, and
the other being a very bright tone of color.
Bonnet strings are already wider than '
they were, and it is expected that during
the winter their width will increase still
more. Velvet faced with satin is the .fa—
vorito for this purpose. It is tied in an
. ample and becoming bow beneath the
chin, and the ends are worn rather longer
than they used to be. White ribbons with
a black border are greatly used for the
strings of gold and black or entirely jet
bonnets, and a flower of bright color is
introduced in order to give relief to this
magpie effect. Blue and heliotrope are
used in the same costume, and pink and
heliotrope, the latter being very pretty if
the proper shades are selected.
The illustration shows a gown of bluish
gray cloth trimmed with garnet velvet. It
is out in princess style, the bottom being
bordered by a bias band of velvet. The
skirt is decorated with three horizontal
bands of N o. 100 garnet velvet ribbon, and
two similar bands trim the front of the car-
sage. The gigot sleeves are of velvetf N ar-
row jet passementerio forms the additional
trimming of the bodice. The bat is of
garnet velvet adorned with black plumes
and two cars of Sevres blue velvet.

Fatal‘Exploilon‘ of Sewer Gal.
FORT WAYNE, Nov. 7.—By an explosion
of sewer gas in the basement of Westmim
ster seminary. a young ladies’ college in
this city, today. Clara Dlebold was fatally
burned and Edith Masters was seriously
injured. They were servant girls at the
seminary and had gone into the basement
to see about a leak in the water pipes,
lighting motcles for that purpose.
