and Observe.
Betrothal rings were used by the Greeks;
and at the present day they are used in thg
east as well as in the west as pledges o
afiection.
Leap year, it appears, is due to the on.
terprisc of the canny Scotch lasses. In
the year 1288 a statute was published by
the Scotch parliament ordaining that dur-
ing the reign of “her maist blessit majes-
tie Margaret” every maiden and lady of
high and low estate should have liberty to
speak to the man she liked. If he refused
to~:take her to be his wife, she should have
the privilege of fining him £100 or less,
according to his estate, unless he could
make it appear that' he was betrothed to-
another woman, in which case he would .
be free to refuse. After the death of Mar-
garet the women of Scotland became clam-
orous for their privileges, and to appease
them another act of parliament allowed
them to propose every fourth year.
The old custom of throwing an onion
after a bride is doubtless well known. It
had the same origin as the old Scotch cus-
tom of throwing a besom after a cow on
its way to market—to avert the evil eye—-
and thus insure luck.
There are some things thata bride must,
remember. Her bodice must be high in
the neck, her sleeves reach quite to her
wrists, and her gown must fall in full,
unbroken folds that show the richness of
the material, and there must be very little
suggestion of such frivolities as frills or
ribbons of any kind.
The wedding gown illustrated is of
white satin, made in princess style, with
a long train. The“right side 0f the skirt is
ornamented with a knot of white moire
and a piquet of orange flowers. The darts
of the bodice are outlined with fine em-
broidery, and the corsage is cut square to
show a guimpc of white mousseline do
sole. A satin ruching borders the cor-sage,
and tho gigot sleeves are draped by piquets

A writer on physical development says
the human frame is like a tree and grows
as it is bent. Stooping, pushing the head
forward weakens the lungs. Always in
walking lift the feet and put them down
firmly, but lightly. Put down the front of
the foot first, not the heel, and rest your
weight on the ball of your foot, so that the .
center of gravity falls plumb through your
hips and the muscles of your lower limbs

instead of at the end of the spine. The
muscles of the hips and waist should be,
trained to bear their full share of the
weight of the body, and so preserve the
elasticity of the figure. A good exercise
for this end is to sit bolt upright for half
an hour’at a time reading, sowing or do-
ing whatever you like, only not letting
yourself sink down into your hips. An
excellent exercise for training young pee.

The woman who has not an erect car-

Folds and gathers disguise the bad lines
of the form that are pitilessly revealed by
a perfectly plain gown. A round shoul-
dered person usually looks best in a bodice
with a full back and a skirt with a large
allowance of material gathered into- the
waistband behind. Shirred bodices are be-
coming to very slender women, and the
present fashion of immense sleeves is an
admirable device for widening narrow
shoulders. .
The sketch shows a gown of absinthe
green amazon cloth. The plain skirt is
finished with stitching and forms godets
on each side of 'a narrow tablier. The
round corsage is gathered at the neck and
waist, and there is a black velvet belt,
adorned with two gigantic bows. Similar
bows are placed at the elbows of the gigot,
sleeves, and a ruche of black feathers~bor-
