Satin has a great vogue in Paris at pres- .
out, while moire antique replaces ordinary
moire. The newest weave is miroir moire,
which has a changeable effect as well as
the water mark. A beautiful stuff called
colours do genes has a satin ground with.
raised velvet flowers and is employed for
rich evening cloaks. Velvets of all kinds
are seen, beaded and changeable or with a
lacelike pattern imitating guipure.
Black enters largely into the com 061-
tion of most costumes, as ‘it is bound do
in these days of brilliant colors, ,in order
to give the latter their true value. N o
fashionable gowns are seen in brilliant,
solid tints. There is always a combina-
tion of tones and materials, save, of course,

in those serviceable cloth gowns which are
intended for informal out of door wear,
whose charm lies in their neatness rather
than in their color._ Entire black gowns
are rendered bright by chifi‘ons of rainbow
hues, cherry, bluet and straw being the
favorite shades for these filmy ruffles that
so becomingly festoon the bodice. Crepe
de chine and inousseline do soie divide the
honors of corsage trimming.
Last winter every woman felt it neces-
sary to possess a black moire skirt, which
she were with different bodices and coats.
This season the separate skirt is quite as
necessary, but it is made of brocade in-
stead of moire.
A great many checks and plaids are
seen in goods particularly suited for chil-
dren’s wear. These look best when com-
bined with plain goods matching the pre-
vailing color—of the check. Recent impor‘
tations show shepherd’s plaids in red, blue
or green with black.
Twilled woolen goods with a change-
able ofiect are displayed among other see.-
sonable materials, and, although not par-
ticularly new, they are attractive.
An illustration is given of n redingote
gown of pompadour brocade. The skirt is
trimmed with a. wide flounce, and the rev-
ers and flaring pufls are covered with an

point. English women of the upper class
think nothing of a five mile tramp in any

it. The. diet also should be regulated.
Pastry, cake and rich food of all sorts tell
unfavo ably upon the complexion.
Even a perfect complexion cannot, how-
ever, bear the juxtaposition of every color,
for there are perfect complexions of all
types, although they are unfortunately
rare. The perfect blond skin is placed at
a disadvantage by orange, whilethe per-~
feet brunette complex bn is ruined by,
turquoise. It therefore behooves the aver-1
age woman to be careful in her selection of
tints for the wardrobe, since so much de-
pends upon them.

would suit a pale brunette. It is of 'tomato
peau do sole, and the.balloon elbow sleeves

sixteenth mayor of Brooklyn, died at his
home, 50 South Portland avenue, in his
seventy-seventh year. Paralysis was the
