YOKOHAMA, Oct. 1o.--'l‘he advance
guard of the Japanese army has crossed
the Yalu river and formed a new camp.
A battle is believed to be imminent. It is
reported that the Japanese have captured
Chefu. -
Chefu is a' treaty port of China on the
north coast of the Shangtung promon-
tory. It has a good harbor, an active
trade and a population estimated to num-
ber about 30,000. "
Fuchau, one of the treaty ports of
China and capital of the province of Fu-
kien. is situated about 26 miles from the
mouth of the Min river. Fuchau has a
naval arsenal, shipyards and a school of
navigation. Near it are extensive lead
mines, and the black tea district is with-
in 70 miles of that place. Consequently
Fuchau carries on a large trade with the
maritime provinces of China both by land
and water as well as with the Linkiu
islands and Japan. Its population is es-
timated at 500, 000.
Japan’s Naval Prize Courts.
LONDON. Oct. 10.-—A dispatch to The
Standard from Berlin says that The
R’eichsanzelger states that Japan decreed
the creation of naval prize courts on Sept.
20, and that one of these courts has ac-
tually been sitting since Sept. 21. The
v supreme court sits at Tokyo.
tsin which gives a new version of the
battle at Asan. The writer says the J ap-
anese tried without success the tactics
which they later carried out at Ping-Yang
with brilliant success. It is added that
the full details of the battle will never be
known, but that the Japanese surrounded
the Chinese and delivered a night attack.
The Japanese so managed matters, how-
ever, that each of their divisions mistook
the other for the enemy and dealt severe
execution to their own men, enabling the
Chinese forces to cut through the oppos-
ing lines and continue their march.
It is learned on the best authority that
the European powers are acting in bar-
mony. They do not intend to permit the
integrity of Korea to be disturbed and
will actively enforce this decision should
Japan attempt a permanent occupation of
the peninsula.
More Chinese Atrocities.
SHANGHAI, Oct. 10.-—A dispatch from
Chemulpo, dated Oct. 8, says that there
are 14 Japanese transports in the harbor,
and that since Sept. 27 they have landed
7,800 troops and 756 coolles. The dispatch
adds that the defenses of Seoul, the capi-
tal of Korea, are being strengthened, and
that the garrison has been re-enforced by
4,000 Japanese troops in anticipation of
an outbreak upon the part of the Korean
insurgents.
Referring to the conduct of the Japa-
nese troops in Korea, the Chemulpo dis-
patch says that while on the march even
the private soldiers pay the Koreans for
everything obtained from them. The dai-
ly endpcnse of the operations of the Japa-
nese army is said to be 300,000 yen.
The same dispatch says that the Chi-
nese recently crucified two Japanese pris-
oners who fell into their hands, and they
are also said to have beheaded two wound-
ed Japanese soldiers who were found in
an outpost hospital which had been bur--
rledly abandoned.
To Terminate the War.
PARIS, Oct. 10. -—A dispatch received
here from Rome says that the Italian
minister at Peking has addressed a note
to China, at the request of his govern-
ment, inviting pour parlors with Japan,
in an endeavor to bring about an end of
the war, and oflering, his own ofiices in
order to complete such an arrangement.
It is also stated that the general of the
Jesuits has sent amemorlal to the pope,
asking the latter to use his influence with
the European powers in order to terminate
the war between China and Japan.
British Ships at nongkong.
HONGKONG. Oct, lO.—A dispatch from
Fuchou says that the river has been
closed for shipping.
The British first class armored cruiser
Undaunted, 12 guns. Commodore Edwin
H. Richards, which had been ordered to
proceed to Nagasaki, Japan, for repairs,
has been ordered to remain here. The
British second class screw gunboat Fire-
brand, four guns, Lieutenant and Com-
mander Lionel G. Tufnell, has been or-
dered to proceed to Newchwang, at the
head of the gulf of Leno-Ton.
Delays In Cablegrams.
NEW YORK, Oct. rid—The Commercial
Cable company today issued a bulletin
saying:
“Messages from Tien-tsin via the
Northern company’s lines take nine hours
in transit, and from Yokohama telegrams
Via the
Eastern company’s route messages from
Yokohama are three hours in transit.”
Mukden Will Soon Fall.
LONDON, Oct. 10.-—-A dispatch received
here from Shanghai says that a second
Japanese army is reported to have crossed
the Yalu river and to be advancing upon
Mukden. which, it is believed, will soon
fall, as the Chinese are reported to be in
state of demoralization. .
A Receiver Asked For.
CHICAGO, Oct. 10.—The Independent
Fuel company has filed a bill for a receiv-
er against the Superior Light, Heat and
Power company. Complaint is made that
the plant of the defendant is heavily mort-
gaged to the Phenix Iron Works company
of Meadville, Pa, and that a foreclosure
has been threatened,
Ben Butler's Grandson Resigns.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 10.—The president
has accepted the resignation of Second
Lieutenant Butler Amos, Eleventh infan-
try, a grandson of the late Benjamin F.
Butler and a native of Massachusetts.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 10,—The wife of
