The grand concert of the Arion sing-
ing society Was held In their hall on Ma
present and a pleasant evening spent.
At a meeting of the City council held
last evening, it was voted to widen
Cedar and West streets and purchase a
$75 safe for the use of the city surveyor.
After some business of minor import-
ance and adjournment was taken until
next Monday.
The business of the New York, New
wonderfully during the month of Sep
tember, and it is stated 0n excellent
authority that September has been
one of the best- months in the history
of the road. The increase is most
prominent in the throng passenger and
freight business. The through passen-
ger has increased 10 per cent. and the
freight business to such proportions
that it is almost impossible to handle
it. The business on the steamboat
lines connected with the company has
also increased.
Last evening at 6. 30 O ’elock Louis E.
Watson. of Reading, Pa., who had been
attending to some business In this city,
was crossing the tracks at Washington
street when he was run into by Morris
Hartigan, driver for Mr. Prentice.
The horse struck Watson and knocked
him down, at the same time kicking
him In the face. The blow turned
Watson over and his feet caught 1n the
rear axle of the carriage and he was
dragged across the tracks into South
Main street before the horse could be
stopped. When picked up Watson was
made him as comfortable as possible
until the ambulance arrived, when he
was taken to the hospital in charge Of
Dr. Allen. An examination showed
the nose broken and a gash across it
whichsevered the cartilage allowing the
nose to fall down, giving many the im-
pression that his nose had been cut off,
Medical assistance was rendered and
the patient is doing nicely. Oflicer
Decker arrested dr1ver Hartigau but
released him as soon as it was found
that Watson was in no danger.

‘ Stroll In Paris.
The Parisian is a vivenr, but there is
one thing he is not, and that is a shop-
say's arecent writer on Parisian
lklfc, who evidently does not hold to gener-
ally acoepted ideas. A stroll along the
boulevard soon demonstrates that the art
improvement. The Parisiennc never goes
out shopping to satisfy her curiosity, or to
“have a look around,” or to kill time, or
“price” goods. Before setting out to make
a purchase she has exactly determined on
what she requires. She does not trouble
the young man behind the counter with a
Vague description of pattern or material,

in the search for which he turns over bales
upon bales of goods on the counter, to be
finally told that the fair purchaser cannot
at all see what she wants. The French
calicot would not stand that, so madame
enters, shows a small pattern or asks for
exactly what she wants, gets it and re-
turns home, with the result that persuasive
powers on the part of the shopman, cheap-
ness of price as an inducement to purchase
and so forth are not needed, and, al-
though keenly alive to the advantages of
seizing upon a bonne occasion, or“bar-
gain,” she dOes net give trouble for noth-
ing in a shop.
Perhaps it is because the Parisienne has
the dry goods instinct developed to such
perfection that she is so ideal a customer.
However simple her mode of selections
maybe, she has a keen eye to the true
money value of What she buys, and it
would be difficult to ovcrreach her. But
the chief charm Of her gowns is their Pa-
risian quality and not their cOst.~ Only
Paris could produce such a costume as that
shown in the sketch, for instance. It is
of myrtle green glacc silk, the plain skirt
being covered half way up with an appli-
cation or heavy cream lace. The round
waist is Shirred lengthwise and has a yoke
of the same lace bordered with a frill of
cream moussellne de solo. The balloon
elbow sleeves arc fblishcd with a similar
frill. The choux and the pulling that
bxcrders the lane on}. the skirt are of silk,
