ATLANTA, Oct. r6.——At no time since
1870 has there been as much excitement
~ over an election as exists at present. The
‘Democrats only claim the state forAtc
ikinson by a small plurality. while the
5Populists assert that when full returns
shall have been receivad. which will not
be before a‘ day or two, it will be found
that Hines, their candidate for governor.

There will be 65 Populist members in
the Georgia legislature which will meet
in this city in next November. Returns
coming in today. officially verified, pull
down Atkinson’s majorities. and it looks
now as if he would not have more than
10,000 in the state. This is the first time
since 1870 that the Democratic majority
has fallen below 40,000.

majority last year was 65, 000.
The most startling feature of the elec-
tion, however, is the foot that several con-
gress districts show clean Populist major.

cratic delegation in November next. In
the First, Second, Eleventh and Eighth
districts, where the Populists were hardly
organized, and where they, did not run
legislative tickets in half the counties, the
Democratic majorities of two years ago.

Many Surprises.
In Henry G. Turner’s district, the Elev-
enth, where hardly a Populist county
ticket appeared, the Democratic major-
ities fell off 50 per cent. The Tenth, Tom
Watson’s old district, gave a clear Popu-
list majorlty. The Fourth, now repre-
sented by Charles J. Moses, is Populist
also, and returns coming in from the Sev-
enth indicate that that district will be
Populist also. Carter Tate’s district. the
Ninth, only missed being Populist by
seven votes.
There is a strong impression that the
disastrous result to Democracy is due to
Secretary Hoke Smith and Congressman
Henry G. Turner. Two years ago in .the
presidential campaign Hoke Smith refused
to act in the discussions under direction
bf Chairman Atkinson of the executive
committee. Now that Atkinson was run-
ning for the governorship Smith threw
himself into the campaign making a clear
fight against free silver coinage except by
the agreement with foreign nations. This
was controverting the position previously
taken by the state platform and the nonii-
nee for governor. Congressman Turner,
in advocacy of the same idea, went into
every district, almost wholly avoiding his
own, and declared for Cleveland's vieWs.
The Populists were quick to catch onto
this wrangle in Democratic ranks and tom
talized free silver Democrats with the posi-
tion of the administration as developed by
the two representatives stumping the
state. From that time the attendance on
Democratic meetings fell oil, and the Pop-
ulist meetings increased largely.
Populists Denied Representation.
It was in this condition of unrest that
the Democratic state committee refused
the request of the Populists for represen-
tation on the boards of election managers.
Unfortunately for the Democrats, the close .
vote which is being reported ii'fl’Otds the
Populists the opportunity of declaring
that the result will be tampered with in
many counties. While there is hardly any
legitimate room for such a charge, yet it
doubtless will be made so constantly as
to grow into a belief.
The Republicans voted solidly with the
Populists all through the state, though
there was a considerable division of the
colored vote, owing to the presence of
campaign money on both sides. The Pop-
ulists are hurrying up tonight about nam-
ing congress candidates in the doubtful
districts. They will try to elect Gary J.
Thornton in the Fourth, W. H. Felton
in the Seventh, Newton J. Twitty in the
Ninth and Thomas E. Watson in the
Tenth. "
The Czar’s Ill Health.
PARIS, Oct. 6.—Serious rumors were
circulated here today in regard to the con-
dition of the czar’s health. Transactions
on the boursc in consequence were weak.
BERLIN, Oct. 5. —The boursc today was
, weak on account of alarming rumors in
circulation in regard to the health of the
czar. -
LONDON, Oct. 6.-—Alarming reports
reached the Stock Exchange today about
the czar’s health. The reports, however,
had little effect upon the market, as they
were discredited.
Took a Tour by Himself.
SOUTH HAVEN, Mich, Oct. 6.—The
whereabouts of Dr. Ransom, who disap-
peared after arranging to sail around the
world with a party of tourists, are known.
E. P. Townsend has admitted that he
knows where Dr. Ransom is. The mem-
bers of the Round the World association
will try to compel Townsend to state the
doctor’s whereabouts. '
A New 85 Counterfeit.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 6.—A new counter-
feit $5 national bank note has been discov-
ered by the secret service officials. It is on
the Citizens’ National bank of Niles,
Mich.. check letter, “B” series of 1882. '
The entire face of note is brown instead of
black, no attempt having been made to
hide the evidence of photography.
Indiana Railroad Thieves Caught.
ELKHART, Ind, Oct. 6.—A gang of
thieves who have been robbing cars on the
Lake Shore railroad between this place
and Chicago have been unearthed and
John Wilson and Thomas Riley arrested.
Property to the value of $8, 000 has been
found at different places on the road, and
more is being discovered daily.
Importation of Salt Duties.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 6. —The treasury dc-
partment has received information that
Ambrlz, Cyprus, Portugal, Queensland,
Saba, St. Thomas and Princess islands
are among those countries which impose a
duty on salt. Salt imported from those
countries, therefore, is made dutiable un-
der the, new tarifi not.
Arbitratlng the Textile Strikes.
BOSTON, Oct. 6.—-—The state board of ar-
bitration is now in session here. The ma-
jor portion of the deliberations concerns
the New Bedford and Fall. River strikes.
