TACOMA, Oct. 2.—Attempted wholesale
murder and 3 partly successful jail delivery
have occasioned no little excitement at the
United States penitentiary on MoNell’s is-
land. Warden Palmer of the prison and
four guards had a. remarkable escape from‘
sudden death. The prisoners, led by John
Wade, a notorious smuggler, who oncé
befcre made a. successful escape, secu
poison and placed it in the food of Ward-
an Palmer and assistants. But for the
fact that the desperate prisoners used too
much of the stuff not one of the intended
victims would ’ have escaped alive. As it
was, all of them were made deathly sick.
During the excitement which followod
four of the prisoners, with Wade at their
head, made their escape from the island,
and despite the most vigorous search the
quartet have been at large ever since.
The island is separated from all other
’lund bya mile of saltwater. It is believed
that the four men escaped on a rude raft
and are headed for British Columbia, if
they have not already arrived there. The
prisoners intended to kill the guards and
then set all the 'men in the prison, 50 in
number, at liberty.

PHILADELPHIA,
Luff, who for many years has conducted
a well known real estate business at 1357
Passyunk avenue, has been missing from
the city for three weeks, and the cause of
his going is a complete “mystery. .
At the time of the Keystone bank fail-
ure he was one of the unfortunate vico
time, having on deposit close to $3,000,
nearly all of which he lost. Subsequent
to this he seemed to lose heart at times,
but still continued his close watch of the
interests intrusted to his care. He was
the agent for a large number of properties,
including some owned by one of the
judges of the courts, and seemed to enjoy
the confidence of all who had dealings
with him. He was about 60 years of age,
of genial disposition and methodical in all
his actions. Since his absence his son has
been looking after the business.
He was the owner of some land in Flora
ids, and his family think there is a bare
possibility that he has gone there.
The Olberg-Russell Case.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 2.—-Mrs. Ella C. O]-
berg. wife of John G. Olberg, disappeared
from her home Saturday morning, and
She was to have been the principal wit~
ness in the prosecution today by her hus-
band of Major Alexander A. Russell of
the pension bureau, who is said to have
forged Olberg’s name to deeds of trust,
under which his property was sold, and
to have induced Mrs. Oiberg to sign them.
Unique Plan to Locate a Sunken “'reck.
DUNKIRK, N. Y., Oct. 2.—A unique
method of locating a sunken wreck will
be tried this week. The Dean Richmond
went down about a year ago, taking with
her every soul on.board. The insurance
underwriters have tried hard to locate her.
Now they have arranged with spiritual-
lsts, who say they will try to find the
steamer through the aid of the spirits of
the drowned passengers. .

ATLANTA, Oct. 2.—Elaborate arrange-
ments are being made by the citizens’
committee for the entertainment of the
delegates to the thirteenth annual con-
vention of the American Street Railway
association, which will open two weeks
hence in Machinery hall of the Piedmont
exposition.
Another Tin Plate Plant.
WHEELING, Oct. 2. — The Wheeling
Corrugating company has begun the erec-
tion of a mammoth tin plate plant. This
will. when finished, he the fourth tin plate
mill built in this section in recent years.
Four Perished In the Flames.
KENOSHA, Wis, Oct. .—The residence
of B. B. Pierce of Wilmot, Wis, was de—
stroyed by fire today. Three sons at ages
ranging from 25 to 35 years and a daugh-
ter of 18 perished in the flames.
Twelve Horses Burned.
IRVINGTON, N. Y., Oct. 2.-—Crisfield’s
livery stables, with 12 horses, and two
houses and a barn were dostr eyed by fire.

Killed on Trolley Tracks.
MARIETTA, 0., Oct. 2.-—Glarenco Jus-
tice and Byron Wilson were run over by
electric cars. They had gone to sleep on
the track. Justice is dead, and Wilson is
dying. Both were boys 14 years old.
