PITTSBUHG, Oct. 1. —— The Carnegie
Steel company (limited) has posted no-
tices in the Homestead works that on
J an. 1 the scale for the coming year will
be readjusted.
Prior to the strike of 1892 the scale ex-
pired in June, and this was one of the
points on which one strike was bitterly
fought. The company contended that it
suited better to have the expiration near
the end of the year. when the contracts for
the year were being planned. After the
strike that date was adopted by the com-
pany, and the menhad to agree to it. One
proviso of the scale signing was that each
side was bound to give the other three
months notice of any desired change in
the scale. This has been complied with
by posting the notices before Oct. 1.
When the scale was made last year
there was a big reduction in the wages of
the tonnage men as well as other emo
ployees of the company. It ranged from
10 to 50 per cent and created a great deal
of dissatisfaction among the men. The
turns were also changed. Men who had
been working on eight hour turns were
placed on 12 hour turns for the same and
in some instances less money. The no-
tices posted now merely announce that
the scale will be readjusted, but make no
reference to whether a reduction will take
place or not. The tonnage men have to
look fora reduction, but have no idea how
great it will be.
Considerable dissatisfaction is expected
when the time for signing the scale ar-
rives. The workmen claim that the com-
tpuny is not compelled to make a reduc-
tion since it has all the work on hand
that can be handled. ‘
A CELEBR ATED CASE,
Dr. Atwoll and Senator holy of New Jer-
sey Sued For 850,000 Each.
JERSEY CITY, Oct. 1. -— J ospehine
Hamilton-Atwell of 153 West One Hun-
dred and Fifty-sixth street, New York,
has entered suits in the Hudson county
courts aggregating $100,000 against Dr.
David R. Atwell of Hoboken and William
B. Duly, lawyer and state senator of New
Jersey.
The suits are the sequel to a celebrated
case. The plaintifi was at one time mar-
ried to Dr. Atwell, although when the
ceremony was performed the doctor had a
wife living in Hoboken, a fact which she
claimed not to have known. The bigam-
ous marriage resulted in the arrest of Dr.
Atwell about two years ago. He was tried
in New York city and sentenced to two
years and four months in Sing Sing pris-
on. In April last Atwell was pardoned
by Governor Flower. When Atwell was
released, the luintiff threatened to bring
suit against iiim, and she now asks $50,-
000 for deception.
Senator Daly was counsel for Dr. At-
well during his troubles. During the prog-
ress of the case Mrs. Atwell alleges Mr.
Daly said that she had murdered her firsi
husband and her child. On the strength
of this she brings suit for $50,000 against
him. ’
A Decision Against Uncle Sam.
BOSTON, Oct. 1.—-In the case of Jo-
seph Burtwcll versus Leverett Saiston-
stall, ex-collector of customs of this port,
Judge Colt has handed down a decision
against the government. The question at
issue was the interpretation of the stat-
utes regarding protests against the pay-
ment of duties and involved millions oi
dollars, being a test case. The govern-
ment will appeal. ,
Railroad Extension. .
READING, Pa, Oct. 1. -— William C.
Mayne. solicitor of the Blue Mountain
railroad, has authorized the statement thai
work on the line between Harrisburg
and Slatington will be pushed forward at
once, and that at a recent conference in
New York, which was attended by Chaun
cey M. Depew, arrangements were made
to connect the line with the Vanderbilt
system by way of the Poughkeepsie bridge.
Rode Three Thousand Miles.
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 1. -— Harry J.
Alvord and George S. Easton, members
of the Pastime Athletic club of St. Louis,
who left that city on bicycles on July 26
en route to the Pacific coast, have arrived
here. Both men are in good health, not-
withstanding their 3,500 mile bicycle trip
over the two mountain chains and three
deserts.
Christian Endeavor Convention.
WASHINGTON, Oct. l.-—-thice is given
by Mr. John W. Beer, secretary of the
:National Christian Endeavor organiza-
tion, that the convention will be held in
Boston in 1896 instead of in San Francisco
for the reason that assurances of a ransom
able rate could not be secured from. the
railroads west of Chicago.
No Lives Were Lost.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla, Oct. 1. —- Wire
communication has been restored to all
portions of Florida visited by the storm.
Dispatches to The Times-Union from
Titusville, Jupiter and other east coast
points state that the storm was meet se-
vere, but that no lives were lost.

Mead of Hillsdale has been arrested on
complaint of Miss Caroline Post of New

OMAHA, Oct. l.-The Union Pacific
receivers have filed with the federal dis-
trict court here their first report. It shows
a saving in expenses and indicates an en-
couraging state of afiairs.
Whisky Smugglers Arrested.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va, Oct. 1.-—Thr’ee
white men and four negroes were arrested
here yesterday on the charge of smuggling
two barrels of Whisky from the British
steamship Alicia.

BOSTON, Oct. 1.-—Several more cloth-
ing contractors have signed the agreement
submitted by the striking garment work-
ers, and it looks like a complete victory
for the strikers.
