Union street early this morning, tired and
worn after a hard day’s work. His little
6-months old child was asleep on the
‘bed, and Coakloy, after taking of! his wet
clothes, hurried into bed. As he got in
bed he accidentally, fell on the child who,
awoke with a cry. Coakley’s wife Ma-
rion, aged 35 years, was awake, waiting
for her husband to come home. Coakley
says just as he fell on the child his wife
pulled a 32 caliber revolver from some
below the kidneys. Before he could get
up his wife fired another shot into his
back. With a desperate short he arose
and received a third shot. This one struck
him in the chest. He fell back On the
bed, and his wife a short time after noti-
fied the police. Coakley was removed to
the City hospital, and Mrs. Coakley was
arrested. At the hospital it was said that
-Coakley’s wounds may prove fatal. He
says his wife shot him for no reason what-
ever except because he fell over the baby.
She, however, says for the past year he
has abused her, and she could not stand it
any longer. A few days ago she bought
the revolver and laid it in the bed. She
intended using it as soon as he abused her
again. This morning when he came home
she says he abused her again and struck
her in'the face. Then when he laid on
the bed she shot him. Strange as it may
seem, none of the tenants in the house
heard the shots. Coekley denies abusing
his wife, and among the employees on the
Seventh avenue line he is known as a
quiet, sober and industrious man. They
all speak well of him. Mrs. Coakley was
married before and had five children by
her first husband. She was held in the
Butler street police court to await the re-
sult of his injuries.
One Chicago Game Thrown Out.
CHICAGO, Sept. 18,—The Chica cNew
York game, which was transferre to the
Polo grounds and which was lost by the
New York team, has been thrown out. It
will be played during the present series at
this city. This evens up the Louisville
game protested by Boston, making one
less lost game and one less game played
by New York in the League summary.
A Bishop Left 850,000.
BROOKLYN, Sept. 18.—Tho will of the
late Bridget Dalton, which was contested
before the surrogate by her lleir's,- was ad—
mitted to probate today. She left an estate
valued at $100,000 and divided 8. portion
of it among her relatives and churches.
This amount was about $60, 000. She left
the residue of the estate, amounting to
$50,000, to Bishop McDonnell.
A Rejected Sultor’s Crime.
PORTLAND, Or., Sept. 18.—-J. W. Stanc-
gels, a civil engineer, shot and killed Mrs.
Mable Colvin on the street and then blew
out his own brains. Mrs. Colvin was out
walking when Stanegels met her. “ Stenc-
gels was an engineer employed at the city
park, and it is said he was desirous of pay-
ing attentions to Mrs. Colvin. but she de-
cided not to receive them.
Assaulted a Three-year-old Girl.
NEW YORK, Sept. 18,—The police of the
Macdougal street station are looking for a
man who assaulted Lizzie Waters, the
EVA-year old child of John and Lizzie W9.-
ters, who live at 507 Washington street.
The assault was committed some time
yesterday afternoon. The child Was at-
tended by Police Surgeon Van Keuren.
A Steamer Destroyed by Fire.
ATLANTIC CITY, N. J., Sept. 18,—The
passenger steamer Golden Gate was entire-
ly destroyed by fire today at Longport.
The Golden Gate was commanded by Cap-
tain D. B. Hollinger and had had a very
successful season. She plied between
Longport and Ocean City and other places
along the coast.
Scotch Miner-5’ Strike Collapsed.
EDINBURGH, Sept. 18.-7—The strike of
the Scotch miners has collapsed. Ten
thousand miners descended into the pits
today, and the pickets who have been stir.
tioned about the works were withdrawn.

W. Clyde, Which arrived this morning
from Haitian ports, brings no news of a
startling nature. 'All was remarkably
