The Only Representative of the Lone'Star
State In the Naval Parade Was a
Young Lady—Estimates of the
Number of People Present.
Prr'rsnnao, Sept. 11.-—-'1‘he full forces of
the Grand Army are in the city and have
complete possession. Many western depart-
ments arrived, among them thoseof Colo-
rado and Wyoming, Minnesota, Michigan
and Missouri. The parade of naval vet-
erans took place in the morning. Over
1,000 men, under the command of Rear
Admiral O. B. S. Osbcn, were in line. The
old salts were cheered all along the line
of march, which extglded through the
principal downtown streets, alongjalififth
avenue and Smithdeld street and over to
Allegheny. In the parade were carried
many historic relics of naval warfare,
among them the torn and time stained
banner which flew over the good old Kear-
sarge. The formation took place at 8’
o’clock, and the parade moved at 10. Miss
Carrie Lowe, daughter Of General A.
L. Lowe of Fort Worth, Tom, was in the
pzarade, carrying the colors of the Dupont
aval association of Texas. She is a guest
of Admiral Osbon, having stopped 03
here on her way to New York. She was
the one representative of the' Lone Star
State in the parade of the salts, and her .
appearance elicited unbounded enthusi-
asm.
Commandant W. S. Buckland was in
command of the armed camps, which pre-
sented a martial front. The First Ohio
regiment, Sons of Veterans, occupied the
right of the line. he column was re-
viewed by the national officers from a
stand on Cedar avenue, Allegheny. Miss
Daisy Tittle, the mascot of the naval vet-
erana’who arrived from Cincinnati, was
in the parade. She was dressed in regu-

Miss Tittle has been the mascot of the or-
ganization since its inception and is a
general favorite among the tars. She will
occupy a place of honor in the Grand
Army parade. The naval Veterans went
into their annual convention in the after-
noon. Thirty-four associations were re -

the east on the headquarters train, to.
gether with his stud. .
National Headquarters Opened.
He was escorted to the Monongahela
House by a detail of national guardsmen
and a band of music. Upon his animal
at the hotel the national headquarters
were formally Opened, and there was a
rush of visitors. Governor Pattisou of
Pennsylvania is here. All the state head-
quarters have been opened, and the voter
the are as enthusiastic over their hospita-
ble reception as are the people of the city
over their visitors.
Arrangements are perfected for the big
parade of veterans, when 90,000 men are
to be in line. Fully 50,000 visitors are
now in the city, and more are coming on
every train.
Five hundred extra policemen are on
duty, and the best of order prevails The
mayors of Pittsburg'and Allegheny have
issued proclamations asking that as much
business as possible be suspended, so that
man people may see the big G. A. R.
para e. The down town streets are al-
most impassable, so great are the crowds -
which closely pack the sidewalks. It is‘
expected that 300, 000 strangers will be in
the city exclusive of the veterans and
their relatives. Windows on Fifth Avenue
and other prominent ’ down town streets
are being sold at premiums for the parade.
All the national officers of the Women's
Relief corps have arrived and have taken
rooms at the Monongahela House. To-
night dozens of reunions and 'a campfire
took place, being the first of a series which
will extend through the entire week.
Noyes post of Cincinnati gave a reception
to all the Ohio delegates at city hall. The
gathering was addressed by Governor
Pattison of Pennsylvania and Governor
McKinley of Ohio.
The police from other cities and the 10-
cal force are arresting many suspicious '
characters and crooks and are retiring
them until after the encampment.
Entertaining the Fair Ones.
In the afternoon, at 2 o’clock, a car-
riage drive was given to the visiting la-
dies of the relief corps by the entertain-
ment committee of Pittsburg ladies. . The
drive was through Shenley park and other
points of interest in the city. The Sev-
enty-sixth regiment of Pennsylvania in.
fantry had its reunion, as did the Elev-
enth Pennsylvania reserves, the Second
Ohio cavalry and the Fourth Pennsylva-
nia cavalry. Senator Quay’s regiment,
the Eighteenth Pennsylvania cavalry, re-
united in the evening, and the senator
was present. Senator J. B. Gordon of
Georgia. who was second in command of
the Confederate army at Appomattox; is
in the city and met a number of men who
were in the Union army when: Lee gave
up his sword to Grant. The meetings
were affecting. Senator Gordon will do-
liver a lecture before leaving the city.
Resolutions were presented at the after-
noon’s session of the Naval Veterans’ asso-
ciation asking congress to establish a col-
lege for the education of the daughters of
soldiers and sailors. _
Pittsburg is rapidly filling up with vis-
itors, and it is becoming more difl‘lcultev-
sry hour to thread the crowds .on the
streets. The arrivals’ for the day up to
noon are estimated at over 40, 000, and the-
total number of visitors here almady is
placed at 150, 000. The influx during the
afternoon and evening was enormous-but
high Water mark will not be reached un-
til tomorrow.
