is badly wanted here by the local authori-
ties. Car‘ain Lees thinks he is the man
. who esca ad from this city in last Feb-
ruary after robbing members of the Uni-'
versity club of valuable jewelry.
The description of' “Gordon” or Gris-
WOld given in the dispatches fits the man
whom the local police have been looking
for for the last six months. On Feb. 15
last a man calling himself Henry Francis
Gordon was ,employed 'as a bedmaker at
the University club on Sutter street. _ He
was apparently about 30 years of age. He
spoke with an English accent. He came
recommended by the British Benevolent
society and was also said to be a member
of the Young Men’s Christian association.
He worked but a few days and the .dis-
appeared, taking with him several hun-
dred dollars’ worth of rings, chains.
watches and other valuables, which he
had taken from the rooms of the gentle-
man who lived at the Club.
, The matter was reported to the police
and an investigation ordered. It was as-
certained that theBrit-ish Benevolent so-
ciety knew little or nothing of the man,
and also that he had no connection with
the local branch ' of the Young “Men’s
Christian association. He had a wife liv-
ing in this city and deserted her after the
robbery.
Lake Not Born to Crime. _
CHICAGO, Aug. 28. ~William Lake, one
of the St. Paul railway robbers, who was
so desperately wounded before he was
captured Saturday, is doing well. It is
said that he came of a good family, and
that his father is William Lake of Oswe-
gp, N. Y., a traveling man for a New
York nOWspaper. Lake is a casket trim-
mer‘and had been out of work for months,
and he and his wife were on the verge of
starvation when he and Griswold made
the sensational raid.
Newell's Body Sent to Chicago.
YOUNGSTOWN, 0.,- Aug. 28.—Today the
body of John N. Nowell, the dead railroad
president, was taken from-the Tod House
to the Lake Shore depot, where the spe-
cial train was waiting to convey it to Chi-
cago. The pallbearers were prominent
manufacturers of this city—7John F. Tay-
lor, John G. Butler, Jr., L. E. Cochran.

been covered by a thick cloud of smoke. for
the last three days, caused by forest fires
in Wisconsin and northern Michigan, that
