Better Outlook at New Redford, but More
. Shutdowns at Fall River.
NEW Bspronn, Mass, Aug. 22 -'1‘iie
mills of the city are completely tied up to-
day, even those which were running yes-
terday being suspended today. The How-
land corporations have not yet resumed '
work, but undoubtedly will within a few
days, *as an agreement has been fully
reached. ‘ The spinners’ executive com-
mittee today devoted their efiorts to get-
ting the Bennett and Columbia mills,
which manufacture the same line of goods
as three Howland corporations, into line,
and from statements made privately by
the officials of these mills there is some
reason to believe that the effort will be
successful.
The Sate of the strike now depends upon
» the cloth mills. Some of the treasurers
are disposed to fight it out if it takes ,all
winter, and they assert that an agreement
has been reached whereby the mills are to
be locked up indefinitely, but on the oth-
er hand individual treasurers are quoted
as saying that they are looking for a loop-
hole to get out of the trouble and will be
glad to find it quickly.
The Bristol mill, which was prosecuted
in court recently for running on Saturday
afternoons, is so' loaded with orders that
a gentleman very close to the management - -
said today it could not think of shutting-
down for any length of time. '
It may be, however, that even if the
manufacturers finally concede the wage
question the strike will not immediately
end. The operatives are indignant at the
alleged evasion of the recently passed par-
ticulars bill, and at a mass meeting at the
South park today they voted to make this
andssue of the strike and not to return
,to work until the particulars provided by
law are furnished. ,
The spinners’ committee say they do
not regard the Howland concession as a
victory, and they express the belief that
it does not by anv‘means end the strike.
Prohibitionists and Populists' Meetings.
NEW HAvEx, Aug. 22.——The state Pro-
hibitionists opened a three days’ conven-
tion in Warner hall this evening. At
the same time the Populists opened their
convention in Trades Council hall.
Frederick Hilton Dead.
NEW YORK, Aug. 22,—1.1. dispatch from
Carlsbad. received here today, announces
the death of Mr. Frederick Hilton, the
youngest son of ex-Judge Hilton and a
partner in the firm of Hilton, Hughes 85
Co. Mr. Hilton had been a sufierer from
inflammatory rheumatism and by the ad-
vice of his physician went to Carlsbad in
the hope of obtaining permanent relief.
