CHICAGO, Aug. 21.——A Cleveland dis;
patch says that the dedication of the little
Polish church on Freemontstreet'bytho
new American Catholic church, which

It was during the afternoon‘ that the

Kolasquewski was started from the church
to the new cemetery which was to be con-
secrated. While passing through the pro;
cincts of a rival parish a crowd of men
and‘ women jeered the people in line and
threw stones at them. ' '
Upon-the" return of the parade later the
people who caused the trouble were still
there, and then an ugly feeling prevailed
on both sides, and after the soldiers who
acted as a bodyguard for Bishop Vilate
and the other priests had passed the crowd
made a dash at the marching men;
., One of the latter retaliated, and a gen-
eral melee resulted. ,
David Gwyzdla saw his son in the midst
of the fight and started to rescue him. As
he d-id so a man standing on the steps of a
saloon facing the street drew a revolver
and fired into the crowd.
The bullet lodged in Gwyzdla’s left leg,
making a wound that is not serious. The
mounted soldiers charged the assailants
and pursued the man who did the shoot-
ing, but he escaped. . ,
The convention to organize the new
Catholic church has been postponed. '

Osborne, alias Mrs. Thayer, alias Mrs.
Johnson, alias Mrs. Schrief, the confidence
woman who has been going about swin-
dling Yale men, was arrested at the Heu-
blein hotel today.
Her latest victlmwas Dr. Bacon of this
city, from whom she obtained $20 last
night. . .
She said she would leave on the 10
o’clock train for Chicago. He followed
her, and, finding that she was not going
to leave the city, had her arrested. A large
sum of money was found on her.
Her plan of operations was to describe
herself as the sister of Lawrence McCully,
a Yale man who recently died in the
Sandwich Islands. where he held an oili-
cial position. - '
She would call upon Yale men in vari-
ous cities, and tellingIWho she was ask
for money to get to Springfield. She ex-
plained her lack of funds by saying that
she had been robbed of her pocketbook.
She professed to have property in the
West.
Among her victims was the president
of a Hartford bank.

Daring Escape of Prisoners.
BOSTON, Aug. 21.—Edward Gabney and
Frank Wllson, 'two prisoners at the Deer
island house of cdrrection, made a. daring
escape from the island today by crossing
Shirley Gut, where the tide runs like a
millrace, on a small plank. The men have
been traced to Beuchmont, where they are
