The Engineer Paw Obstructions on the
.Track. and Dashed Through Them.
, CLEVELAND, Aug. 8,—Lake Shore ex-
‘press train No. 12, arriving from the west,
pulled into the Union station today after
having enjoyed a most thrilling experience
on the plains of Indiana. ‘
An attempt was made to hold up the
train at Kessler, Indi, upon the identical
spot that the t‘rainwas held up last full.
The .train was just approaching a split
switch at Kosslcr when the engineer no-
ticed that the switch was turned so as to
run the train on the siding. A big ob-
struction of ties and lumber Was piled
upon thp siding a few rods ahead of his en-
gine. The obstruction did not appear, to
be impassable, and-the engineer put on all
steam and leaped through the Iplle, pass-
ing safely on to the main track“ through
the split swicth at a“high rate-of‘sbpeed.
As the train passed the obstruction the
engineer noticed a group of masked men,
and as the 'enginecleared the truck of all
obstacles the would be highwaymen fired
several shots into the train, none of which,
however, took effect. -
The United States express car was at-
tached to the train and had on heard a
large amount of money. " It is thought
that this was known to the'desperadoes
who attempted to hold up the train. Their
disappointment in carrying out their plans
of stopping the train by piling obstruc-
tions upon the track was evinced in their-
firing of shots when they saw that their
plans had been foiled by the boldness of
the engineer in dashing through the heap
of ties upon the track.
' A hlyst'ery of the Rails. _
HILLSDALE, N. J., Aug. 8.—The .body
of an unknown man horribly mutilated,
having been cut in two at the waist, both
arms severed and the legs broken, was
found beside the railroad tracks between
Wood Ridge and Curlstadt. The man
was evidently struck by a passing train.

reached here that John and Charles Moore,
brothers, aged 13 and 18, were drowned in
the Ohio river while out skid riding with
another boy and three girls The other
four persons in the boat were rescued.

An Unusual Accident.

Clark of Boston sustained probably fatal
injuries by being thrown violently against
the seat of a car today. The train came to
a sudden stop, and he fell, striking against
