ALBANY, Aug. l.—Thc work of deepen-
ing and improving the channel of the up-
per Hudson, which has been inaugurated
- :by the national gOVOrnlnent, is now well
under way. The consummation of this
work will take five years and will cost
somewhere in the neighborhood of $3, 000,-
000. The improvements will aflect the
river from Van Wie’s point, three miles
below Albany, and extends to the state
dam above Troy, 8. distance of 12 miles.
They contemplate a channel 400 feet wide
