John McGraw, who had a slight par-
alytic stroke yesterday, is much better
to day and expects to be out again soon.
Maria, the five months old daughte
of Andrew and Maria Baras, died at
her home on Bouton street, this morn
ing.
Another one of those popular excur-
sions will be given to- morrow afternoon
by the City of Albany. The steamer
leaves South Norwalk at 2 o ’clock, for
Port Jefferson, and will leave that place

Miss Libbie Robinson of East Nor-
walk, and Miss Bertie Smith of Roway—
ton, two young girls employed at the
pepcorn stand at Roton Point, left
their employment yesterday and re-
turned to New York with the Sunday
school excursion that had been enjoy-
ing the day at the Point,
James S. Barbour left his coat hang-
ing on a. nail while he was engagedin
making Columbia popcorn at his stand
at Roton Point on the Fourth. When
he donned his coat he found that a gov-
' ernment draft for $100 was missing.
He has stopped payment on the draft
and 13 waiting developments.
The County Commissioners some time
since granted a transfer of the license
of Christopher Larsen. An appeal was
taken to the Superior Court from the
Attor-
ney Hurlbutt acting for Larsen put in
' a plea of abatement, which was grant-
.ed by the court, and the action of the
commissioners is therefore sustained.
Aaron Adams of Greenwich, was in
this city Wednesday looking for his
adopted son, Walter, who ran away
from his home some time ago and who
was refused admittance to the Chil-
dren' s Home last week. The boy could
not be found until yesterday when
Chief Vollmer apprehended him and
notified his father who came up in the
afternoon and took him home.
John M. Hotel: has a very sore nose
to-day. Adog arrived at the express
ofiice yesterday in a crate. “Jack” in
order to take in the fine points of the
animal bent his head down and looked
into the crate. As he did so the dog
{made a grab at John’s proboscis and
caught it between his teeth, and 1n ex-
tricating the nose from its perilous sit-
uation that prominent feature of John’ a
face was badly lacerated. The wound
was dressed by Dr. Burke.

WASHINGTON, July 7.-—-An air of quiet
and serenity prevailed in the chamber
when the senate met 'at . noon today after,
its holiday. The struggle of the past three
months had severely taxed the endurance
of senators, and it Was immediately dew
eided, upon motion of Mr. German, that
when the senate adjourn today it be to
meet on Monday. _ This was to give the
sendtors two more” days Of rest before be-
ginning work on the appropriation bills.
The housejolnt resolution to enable the
secretary of the navy to carry out the work
of increasing the navy was adopted. Ono
resolution and two bills, the direct out-
growth of the existing Pullman strike,»
were introduced.
Mr. Allen (Pop, Neb.).oflcrod a resolu-
tion for the appointment of a commit-
tee of five senators—no more than two to
be of the some political party—to investi-
gate and report on the advisabllityor ne-
cessity of government ownership of rail-
roads and telegraphl, and especially on the
existing troubles between employers and
employees, and what legislation is neces-
sary to prevent strikes and lookout: in the
future and bring about more equitable re-
lotions.
In the House.
The opening prayer in the house was
ofi'ered by Rev. Mr. Heldt of Georgia.
The following bills were passed: Senate
bill for the relief of Samuel Collins and
house bill granting the use of certain lands
to the town of Castlnc; Me, ,for a public
park.
The reference of the tarlfi bill to the
committee on ways and means Was made
this afternoon in the most informal man-
ner possible.
Speaker Crisp laid before the house a
communication from the secretary of the
treasury relating to additional aids to
navigation in Tampa bay, Florida.
He then announced “house bills with
senate amendments.” Reading Clerk
Houghtollng seized a printed copy 'of the
tarlfl bill and read: “House bill N o. 4864.
' A bill to reduce taxation, to provide rove—
nue for the government and for other pur-
poses. ”
Nobody apparently paid any particular
attention to the matter, although several
Republicans dropped the papers they were
reading, and Speaker Crisp calmly re-
marked, “Ordcrcd printed and referred to
the committee on ways and means.’
That is all there was to the proeeeding.
It is understood that the commit-tee on
ways and means will meet promptly and
report back a recommendation for a dis-
agreement. Under the programme the
blll will be put in conference tomorrow,-
and work promptly begun in adjusting
the senate amendments. ,
The Committee's Meeting.
All the members of the house ways and
means cenimlttee were present at today’s
meeting, which was called for 1 o’clock,
with the exception of Mr. Montgomery of
Kentucky and Mr. Whiting of Michigan.
Both gentlemen were telegraphed for, and
Mr. Montgomery replied that he would be
here tomorrow.
The speaker notified him that he desires
him to serve on the conference committee,
which would necessitate his return from
Kentucky today. Mr. Bourke Cockran,
who had been at his home in New York
city for the past week, was also present at
today’s meeting.
It was not regarded as probable that the
Republican members of the committee
would insist upon keeping the bill in com-
mittee indefinitely. They appreciated the
fact that such a course would result in no
practical benefit, but that it would, in
'short, only retard a speedy settlement of
the differences between the two branches
of congress.
Santa Begs For Better Treatment.
PARIS, July '7. -—The Figaro says that
Santa, the murderer of President Carnot,
has addressed a letter to President Cust-
mlr-Perler asking for money with which
tomltlgato the rigor of the treatment he
is receiving in the Lyons prison.- Mme.
Carnot states that from the moment of his
election to the presidency until do was
murdered scarcely a single (11;. passed that
her husband did not receive a menacing
letter.

Big Shoe Factories to Resume.
BOSTON, July '1'.—It is announced today
that the big shoe factories of Isaac Prouty
& Co. at Spencer, Mass, which have been
closed since May last, will reopen in about
15 days with a full force of employees.
