Miss Minnie Grifiin of East‘ N orwalk,
who has been spending two weeks with
Mrs. George S. Hill of Myrtle avenue,
Bridgeport, returned home to- day.
Dennis Dwyer was given ten days in
jail by Justice Barrett this morning for
sleeping in a freight car, and Daniel
Ryan received thirty days for the same
offense.
It is reported that Assistant Superin-
tendent Dunbar was the first to jump
from car No. 3, at the time of the col-
lision, Sunday, closely followed by
motorman Pierce.
George Whelpley put the decorations
on his awning upside down this morn-
ing owing to his excitement from having
caught so many fish at Barlow’s reser-
voir yesterday.
The Pittsfield express which leaves
this city at 12:25 a. m.- struck and killed
a cow at Sanford’s and derailed two cars.
A wrecking train was sent to the scene
of the accident and succeeded in clear-V
ing the track by 7 o’clock.
City Engineer Briggs this morning
notified Contractor Hutchinson to dis;
continue work on the street railway
on West avenue near Cedar street, but
the latter refused to obey. The rail~
road companywas then notified that
theeity would hold it responsible for
all work now being donein this locality.
The regular meeting of the Indian
Harbor Yacht Club will be held at8
o’clock Wednesday evening, June 20, at
the club station, Greenwich. A meet-
ing of the Board of Trustees will be
‘held at 7:30, the same evening, to con-
sider several applications for member-
ship now posted in the Club-house.
At the Council meeting last evening
Mayor Lee presided with all the mem-
bers present. The matter of the Nor-
walk Street Railway company’s tracks
took up the entire evening, Henry
Seymour, Col. Frost, W. B. Eider, R.
H. Golden, Edwin Adams, Stephen
Hatch and John McMahon protesting
against the way the track was being
laid in front of their property on West
Main street. Engineer Hill appeared
for the railroad and received a severe
cross-examination. The matter was
finally left to the City Engineer. A
petition was received from property
owners on Lexington avenue asking.
for an appropriotian for grading and
puttingin water pipes on that avenue.
The contract for constructing Taylor
avenue sewer was awarded to Salvator
Chariot, .whose bid was $1785.50. A
bid of William Sheldon not being ac-
companied by a certified check was not
considered.

Fritz- Muller discovered patches of
singular-seams on the wings of butter-
flies, which'scnt out more than 30 dis-
tinct odors. These scent scales are called
androconia. An excellent study by mi-
croscopical sections of the wings of some
of our butterflies, by Professor M. B.
Thomas, appears in The American Nat-
uralist. He shows that these scales are
the outlet of unicellular glands situated
at the base of each scale. '
One especially prominent was detect-
ed beneath the androconia in the wing
of Danais archippus. The surface of the
wing above the glands is sometimes cov-
ered with a great number of papillae,
from the end of which the scent scales
project, or it may be like the ordinary
surface of the wing. In the former case
the androconia are quite small and but
one to each papilla, at the base of which
lies the gland. This gives the scent
scale the appearance of a small rod
placed in a flask. ' '

SPOKAXE, Wash, June 19.—Thc no-
torioua J ustico of Leland, Ida, went to El-
mer Sperry’s house and calling Sperry to
the door fired bot-h barrels of a shotgun at
him without ~eil'cct. ' He then stabbed
Sperry. Spcri-y’s young son received scven‘
terrible cuts, but knocked Justice sense-
less with the gun. The neighbors wanted
to lynch J usticc, but Sperrysaid he would
shoot; any one who attempted it, as be pro
ferred to let the law deal with Justice.

the policeman who killed Frank Guild,
was taken from jail here and removed to
Winchester for safety. It was feared he
would be lynched if left here.
