a former resident of South Norwalk, is

John Ochs, a. waiter at Carl Schaub’s,
was badly bitten on the hand by a dog
yesterday. Dr. Burke cauterized and
dressed the wound.
Mrs. Andrew Thompson and daugh-
ter have returned to their beautiful and
.sightly residence on this city’s western
hill-side, from their winter’s soaourn in
Florida.
Captain John Drescher with first
mate Thompson and Commissary Sny-
der went down the harbor fishing yes-
terday. They returned later in the
day having caught a good mess of sun

At the meeting of the Red M :n this
evening the adoption war dance Will be
waltzed about the forms of L. L. Sher-
wood and George H. Allen. As both
of these candidates are old scalp hunts
era the dance will not be as interesting
as it might be were each a tenderiooh}
Dnnbury Jack could not stand the
absence of Mrs. Jack in Bridgeport
jail and became and was found intoxi-
cated on the Danbury tracks Sunday.
Officer Money gathered him in and this
morning Justice Barrett sent him to
' Bridgeport to join his Juliet.
The Tramway company started
another gang of men at the lower end
of their extension this morning, who
will work towards the gang from this
end. Mr. McKibben told a GAZETTE
representative this morning that he
gamed to have the cars running by May
The Canoe Club committee, appoint-
ed at the last meeting of the club to
consult with Captains Rowland and
Tuttle in~reference to building new
club quarters, are making satisfactory
headway. Captain Tuttle has advised
the committee that he will build them
a handsome club house at “Hickory
Bluff” in the fall and on Friday of this
week Captain Rowland will take meas-
urements for building the club a hand-
some club house next to the Washing-
ton street bridge.

Bridgeport’s ninth case of small pox
was developed Sunday.
Burglar-s broke open the safe in the
Essex railroad station Saturday night
and secured $12 for their trouble.
Huron P. Henry, a painter, while
working on a house in New Haven Sat-
urday, fell forty feet, landing on his
feet. He was uninjured. The staging
broke away.
The members of Davenport church,
New Haven, on Sunday began the cele-
bration of the dedication of the church.
It was also the twentieth anniversary
of the pastorate of Rev. I. C. Meserve.
The body of a man was found float-
ing in Pembroke lake, Bridgeport,
Sunday. It was identified as that of
err-Selectman Jacob Zefl', a prominent
German of that city. He was subject
to fits and in one of his attacks was
probably drowned. His age was 61.
Benjamin Taylor, who has been
missing from his home in Colebrook
and who was found wandering in an in-
sane condition in Florida, was brought
home Sunday by his friends. Taylor
says he has trumped nearly all the way
south, but he cannot explain why he
lefttlns place so suddenly.
By the will of Mrs. Lavinia L. Parm-
ly of New York her grandson, I’armly
S. Clapp, now of New York, but who
has made his home in Bridgeport for
several years, receives property worth
$2,000,000. Mr. Clapp is 2-2 years old.
About a year ago he was married to
Miss Sallie Ronncll, who had been a
great favorite in society in Bridgeport.
Frederick Spencer Brown, for six-
teen years collector of: town and city
taxes at Hartford, Conn, died Sunday
morning of heart disease. seventy-two
years of age- He leaves a widow and a.
daughter. Mr. Brown was chairman
of the Democratic State Central Com-
mittee for several terms, and was for
eight years chairman of the City Park
Commission.

uorr’s OPERA HOUSE.
An occasion that will doubtless be
memorable in this town will be the ap-
pearance of the most able American
orator now living, Colonel Robert G.
Ingersoll. who lectures at Hoyt’s Opera
House, Friday evening, May 1], on
“What Must We DO To Be Saved?”
Colonel Ingersoll’s increasing years
and his devotion to his home life and
ins law business make it unlikely that
he will ever again visit this town after
this coming lecture. The Colonel in
this lecture disputes the inspiration of
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, as in
his lecture entitled “Some Mistakes of
Moses” he disputed that of the author
or authors of the Pentateuch. He also
proposes a system of practical benevo-
lence which he holds to be more bene-
ficial to man than any presented in the
four gospels. His lecture, while an-
tagonistic to the bellef in faith and
revelation, sets forth the supreme na-
ture and beauty of goodness and kind-
ness. The Colonel . advocates free
thought, “with malice toward none
and charity for all. ”
MUSIC HALL.
One of the sensations of the current
theatrical year will be the holding of
“The County Fair” at Music Hall, May
14, next week. The central figure in
this play is an elderly spinster, prim,
prudish and severely practical, by
name Abigail Prue. Her quaint hu-
mor springs from guilelessness, and her
Sincere anxiety for the welfare of those
about her is touching and amusing.
' In one scene are a husking bee and an
old fashioned cc’mntry dance, but the
overwhelming .episode is a running
horse race. Five fiyers are ridden by
Jockeys at full tilt. Therealis'rn and
thrill of this scene are astonishing.
The sale of seats will begin Saturday,
May 5th, at Plaisted’a and Big '8’.
