Before the superior court, yesterday,
the appeliee in the McNamara license
case filed a. demurrer alleging that the
reasonsfor appeal areinsuifioient in law
to give the appellant, Rev. G. H. Beard
a standing in court. The demurrer
will be argued Tuesday morning.
Danbury Jack is again 9. widower.
Mrs. Jack having taken up her 1‘65].-
dence in Bridgeport jail for 60 days.
Early this morning Chief Vollme 1'
found her in an intoxicated condition,
and gallsntly escorted her to spell at
police headquarters. When Justice Bar-
rett reviewed the case, he found her
guilty, and inflicted the above sentence.
TWU ministers,a committee represent-
ing the recently formed Law and Order
League of Portchester, called on the
saloonkeepers of that town yesterday
and asked them to close their places on
Sunday. All the saloonists agreed to do
so except two, who abuSed the commit-
tee. The proprietors of the cigar, con-
fectionery and ice cream places were
also requested to close, but refused to
do S0.

ber of registrations here will be. about 48,-
000, which is within 3,000 of the total Chi-
nese populati u of the district. A large
part. of this 3,000 comes under the head oi

laborers, and will snfi'er no penalty.

MANCHESTER, May 5.—Roberts, the Eng-
lish billiard player, last night made an
unfinished break, with spot barred, of 1,033
points, beating his own record by 168
points. Play was resumed today, and
Roberts finished his break, placing the
total at- ],393 points, thus beating his rec
0rd by 5535 points.

Fire In a. Female Seminary.

in the Abbot Female seminary here today

panic, and no one was seriously injured.

been convicted here of obtaining money
by false pretenses. The sentence imposed
is four'years in the state prison. During

cured nearly $300,000 from investors.
More Honors For Mrs. Palmer.
CHICAGO, May 5.—It is reported that
Mayor Hopkins will appoint Mrs. Potter
Palmer a member of the city board of edu-
cation on Aug. 1 to succeed Mrs. Flower,
whose term then expires. Mrs. Palmer
will soon visit Japan.

on an extension of the road at $1.40 per
day. Efforts are making to organize a
band of Coxeyites in Omaha. A mass
