A dispatch was received this morning
announcing the death of Thomas Burns.
who died at the Jersey City hospital
last night. He was at one time a. brake-
man on the Danbury road.
A man by the name of Scofield from
N oroton was drivinv down East avenue
ins. road cart this morning and when
opposite the residence of W. H. Earle,
one of the wheels of the cart collapsed
throwing him out. The horse Was
stopped and no other damage done.
Landlord Wm. H. Earle, sent two of
his Park Hotel carriages and a. baggage
wagon to meet the Morison party Sat-
urday evening on their arrival at tho
Pennsylvanian depot, for their trans-
uortation to the Grand Central depot.
On the arrival of Mr. Morison’s re-
mains at South Norwalk, the Messrs.
Raymond conveyed them to the deso-
late home.
Liveryman Dann also had carriages
at the depot on arrival of the train
bearing the stricken family and friends
up from New York, to convey them to
their West avenue residence. These
tender acts of thoughtful kindnessea
were no doubt most grateful to the
afflicted family and friends.

SOUTH CAROLINA’S DILEMMA.
Is It a Prohibition State, a License State or
a. State of Sin and Misery?
COLUMBIA, S. 0., April 23.~“I have quit
the business of state barkeeper, and the
dispensnrv has gone into summer quar-
ters.” This is the sum and substance of
all that Governor Tillman could be pre-
vailed upon to say concerning the lately
diceased dispensary. The state board of
control has made arrangements for wind-
ing up the business. All the county dis-
pensaries have been closed permanently,
Ind the spies or constables-1 are now hunt—
lug jobs.
Governor Tillman could not be induced
to say whether he would call a special
session of the legislature to meet the crisis
brought on by the big plant and stock of
state liquor on hand. H e is evidently con-
sidering the matter very fully. Several of
the state officers are averse to an extra ses-
sion, believing that the stock on hand can
be otherwise disposed of.
Whether the state is in a “prohibition
state, a license state, a transition state or
a state of sin and misery,” as a morning
paper expresses it, no one but thcsupreme
court justices know, and they won‘t tell.
It is probable that an official efi‘ort will
soon is made to get them to explain their
decision. In the meantime the “blind ti-
gers” are embracing the opportunity to
sell all the liquor they can.
