WASHINGTON, March 15.-—Upon the open-
ing of proceedings in the senate today Mr.
Cafl’ery (La) asked to be excused from fur-
ther service on the committee on pensions,
and the request was granted.
. Among the bills introduced and appro-
priately referred was one by Mr. Voorhees,
which he announced he would propose as
an amendment to the sundry civil bill ap-
priating $5,000 for the purchase of an oil
painting of Dolly Madison by E. F. An.
drews. The portrait is intended for the
‘Vhite House.
At 12:30 p. in. Mr. Harris, having handed
over the gavel to Senator Gallinger, asked
that the senate take up- the consideration
of unfinished business—the seigniorage
bill—as a vote was to be taken at 2 o’clock
on the motion of Senator Allison to recon-
sider the vote by which the bill was or-
dered to be read a. third time and possibly
after that on the motion of Senator Man-
derson to commit the bill to the finance
committee. Taking these things int con-
sideration, he asked that the senate ould
immediately take up the bill.
This being agreed to, it was expected
that Senator Dolph would proceed to read
the extracts which Senator Allen yester-
day objected to having printed and which
Senator Dolph was about to read when the
senate adjourned.
Mr. Dolph, however, announced that as
Senator Allen had withdrawn his objec-
tions he had nothing further to say.
All difficulties having been thus smooth
ed away, Mr. Teller took the floor and
spoke in favor of the passage of the bill.

CHICAGO, March 15.~—-Dr. Peabody, acting
director general of the exposition, has re-
ceived from Secretary of State Gresham
the formal demand of the French govern-
ment for $70,000 on behalf of the French
exhibitors whose goods were damaged by
fire in the Manufacturers’ building. Dr
Peabody has conceded the justice ofthe»
claim and leaves the responsibility to be
determined between the state department
and the local board of directors.

Nuns Will Remain as Teachers.
PITTSBURG, March 15.——Notwithstanding
the action of the central board of educa-
tion in declaring against persons teaching
in the public schools in the garb of any re-
ligious order, the directors are determined
to retain the five nuns now teaching in the
Riverside school until the question is final-
ly settled by the courts.

' BERLIN, March 15.-In the reichstag to
day, after much discussion, the sum of
4,000,000 marks was appropriated for the
purpose of erecting a monument in honor
of Emperor William I. The government’s
original demand was for 8,000,000 marks.
Democrats Win at Mount Morris.
MOUNT MORRIS, N. Y., March 15,—The
Democrats elected the majority of their
candidates here and won all the principal

VICTORIA, B. 0., March 15.—-The steamer
\Varrimoo, from Australian ports, brings
word of a. sensational fatality at the little
city of Redwood, the mayor of which,
William Paisley, was shot and mortally
wounded on Feb. 12 by \Villiam Redfern,
city clerk. Redfern, when he saw his vic-
tim could not live, sent four bullets into
his own brain. The council clerk was
smarting under fancied grievances,-chiei
of which was a reduction of salary, the
mayor having‘sanctioned a general reduc-
tion in the civic pay list owing to the hard
times.
After his suicide it was found the clerk
had been in possession of no 'fewer than
three loaded revolvers, and that in his coat
he had aspecial“ pocket made for a. small
French stiletto or double edged dagger.
~_Before the tragedy be destroyed the min-
ute books of the city council since the in-
urporatlon of the city. Other facts con-
firm the theory that he was not responsi-
blefor- his actions at the. time of the com-
mission of the crime.
