How it Happened.

_The following remarkable event. in a lady’s

The Misses Getler gave a conundrum
party at their home on \Vest street last
evening.

Next week the Old Well Cigar com-
pany will close their factory for a week
owing to the lack of orders.

S. Wagner’s cigar store having been
closed Trowbridge & Co. wrll hereafter
have the agency for the favorite cigar
known as “Little Beauty.” ~

Edgar Boughton was arrested for
drunkenness yesterday afternoon and
locked up. This morning J ustlce Bar-
rett released him on payment of costs,
owing to the fact that his aged mother
required his constant attention.

Yesterday afternoon about 3:30
o’clock a gentleman attempted to. alight
from a Trolley car on Washington
street before the car had come to a
He failed to let go the hand rail
and was thrown violently to the ground,
but not injured:

Grand Juror W. M. Raymond, this
morning, took exception to what the
GAZETTE said yesterday in regard to
the recent fight on Washington street»,
and denied that he had ever refused to
sign a warrant for the arrest of the
fighters. He also stated that he had
never had a complaint presented to him
for signature. To ascertain the true
facts in the case a GAZETTE representa-
tive called at the City Attorney’s office
this morning, and was there informed
that the case had been given to Grand
Juror Raymond to investiglate, and that
he had reported that neit er party de-
sired to prosecute and he would not
therefore sign a. complaint.

Another case which proves what the
GAZETTE published in regard to the
Grand Juror system, came up in the
police court this morning. Last even-
ing oflicer G. Washington Gladstone
saw two men fighting and placed one,
Oscar Anderson, under arrest; the oth-
er, Frank Snyder, was released and or-
dered to appear at. court this morning.
When court opened a complaint against
Anderson signed Joy Grand Juror Chas.
F. Hallock charging him with {breach
of the peace was read, to wh1ch_the
prisoner indignantly pleaded not guilty.
Anderson made 0. statement to the
court in which he said that he was as-
saulted on his own porch by Snyder
and that he had resented the assault.
He had witnesses present to prove his
assertions, but as his statement put a
different color to the case and Snyder
failed to appear, Justice Barrett ad-
journed the case until 5 o’clock this
afternoon, when it is expected that
Snyder will be present to plead to a
charge against himself. It is but justice
to officer Gladstone to say that he did
not see Snyder assault Anderson, but
simply saw Anderson pummeling Sny-
der. If the Grand Juror had taken
the trouble to have personally investi-
gated this matter before signing the
complaint Anderson would not have
been arrested.

Edward Leahey of Stamford, a con-
ductor of the Consolidated, who some
weeks ago sought out States Attorney
Fessenden, who is also counsel for the
Consolidated road, and informed him
that he had been taking up tickets with-
out cancelling them and disposing of
them for his own benefit, came ,up be.
fore the Superior Court late Wednes-
day afternoon and pleaded guilty.
Leahey as far as outward signs went
suffered more with the shame of his
situation than any other prismner who
has been before the court this term.
He did not cry like burglar Corbett,
but convulsive twitchings of the mus-
cles of his face and throat told the
story.

Leahey promptly pleaded guilty.
Attorney Fessenden told the court
that after consultation with oflicers of
