Butler Lodge meets to-uight and
works the initiatory degree on two can-
didates. '
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred
Preece of East Norwalk yesterday
morning.
The Epworth League of this city will
give an entertainment at Hoyt’s Opera
House in March.
There was a lively fight in Whistle-
ville last night and several arrests are
liable to be made.
A supper, musical and literary enter-
tainment will be given at the Baptist
church this evening.
The club of young ladies whose first
regular meeting was held in Lauderjs
block January 29, will meet again this
evening.
Several of West Haven’s largest oys-
ter dealers have shut down owing to
the glut in the market. Many women
are thrown out of employment.
A horse hitched to one of Raymond
Bros.’ coal carts fell on Haviland street
this morning and was gotten upon his
feet again with considerable difficulty.
Mrs. Sarah P. Ruggles, wife of the
late Daniel P. Ruggles, died at the
home of her sister, Mrs. William S.
Edmonds, in East Norwalk this morn-
ing, aged 74 years.
A very enjoyable whist party was
given by Mr. and Mrs. William Stevens
last evening, at their home on South
Main street. At eleven o’clock a boun-
tiful repast was served to the guests
present.
Justice Barrett had four cases before
him this morning. James Kenyon,
William McCoy and Philip Morgelnan-
der were charged with peddling with-
out a license. The tWO former were
fined $10 and costs and sent to jai],Mor-'
gelnander was discharged. F. I. Dan-
iels, who has been there many a time
before, was charged with drunkenness.
After hearing a first cla ss argument in-
terspiced with lots of bluff the justice
fined him $53 and cost , which he pr om-
ised to pay by 4 o’closck on Saturday.
Late last evening a. woman claiming
wicked Bridgeport as her home called
at the City Hotel in quest of her hus-
band. To an inquiry she imparted the
information that they had had a. family
row and that her liege and lord had de-
parted from home angry and she had
come to this city looking for him. As
- he could not be located at the hotel she
departed. This morning shortly before
six she alighted from 9. Bridgeport
train and again visited the hotel and
searched the register for her absent
husband’s name. Not finding his name
thereon she stated that she believed he
was there under a fictitious name and
started to go to the room of one_ of the
guests, but was prevented from disturb-
ing the occupants by the porter. She
next visited the Mahackemo, but fail.‘
ing to find him there she left to renew
her search in some other quarter.
The case of Phebe Shaffer vs. Wil-
liam B. ,Reed, trustee, was before Judge
Shumway at Bridgeport yesterday.
Eight years ago Shaffer & 00. owned'
oyster grounds near Norwalk. George
H. Shnfi'er . mortgaged the grounds
through a. second party to his wife
Phebe Shaffer, and afterward assigned
all his property to Trustee Reed who
gained possession of the oyster grounds.
Phebe Shaffer,represented by Attorney
James II. Olmstead, now seeks to fore-
close the mortgage. Trustee Reed was
represented by Col. Russell Frost of
South Norwalk and Judge John H.
Perry,wlio opposed her suit and claimed
that oysters being chattels could not be
mortgaged. Attorney Olmstead claims
that oysters are real-estate and can be
mortgaged. The case is an interesting
one and Jud go Shumway’s decision will
be looked for with much interest by

Some of the Disagrceable Features of Life

Talk about rolling and pitching! No
vessel rolls, pitches and plunges like a.
light-ship. Its anchors hold it firm to
the shock of the waves. There is no
yielding, no graceful swaying to the
swelling of the seas. There are days,
too, when a. fierce fog-horn torments
the ear with a noise such as nature in
her angriest moods never invented.
There is always a glare of light at
night. There is no constant expecta-
tion of reaching port, and life soon be-,
comes a dreary monotony. ‘
In case the light-ship should be cast
adrift, it has been fitted with soils
which will enable it to hold its own in
storm and stress. The hold is fitted
with spacious store-rooms and sleeping-
quartcrs, and a machine for compress-
ing the air which blows the fog-horn.
These fog-horns are what are known in
this country as “siren” Whistles. They
are called sirens probably because that
is what they least resemble. They be-
gin their noise with a. {very thin high
note that distresses the ear. Then
they descend to the low note, and up
and down in rapid succession the
shrieking demonlike noises race. One
French writer has said that the possi-
bilities of this fog-horn are such that
he wonders that some music-leader
has not introduced it in the orchestra
when the Wagner operas are played.
A compressed-air trumpet, he thinks—
and it is just possible that there may
be a little national prejudice in his
opinion—would go well with mytho-
logical l‘ characters and dragons and
unearthly storms and noises.
The writer says the fog-horn
is simply a “terrible instrument}? and
therefore in time the Wagnerlans must
adopt it. A big bell is placed on the
ship for use in case the.fog-horn should
break- down. or scare itself useless.--
