Conflicting Rumors About the Nicthe-
roy and the America.
NOTHING SEEMS CERTAIN.
Nlctheroy May or May Not Have Fallen,
the Cruisers May or May Not Have
Been Disabled, but Everybody
Commends Benham’s Action.
BUENOS Avnns, Feb. 3.—Dispatches re-
ceived here today from Rio de J aneiro
say that the Brazilian minister of war has
resigned after a- somewhat excited inter-
view With President Peixoto. The cause
of the resignation of the minister of wax
is said to have been the fact that he dis-
agreed with President Peixoto as to the
state of affairs in Brazil, and that he pro-
tested strongly against the action of the
president in prolonging the state of siege.
The minister of war is said to have been
in favor of a policy of: conciliation, which,
in his opinion, would end the disturbances
in Brazil much sooner than by prolonging
the state of siege.
The dispatches from Rio de J aneiro also
say that the government transport Itaipau,
which recently arrived at Bahia, has join-
ed issue with the insurgents and has suc-
ceeded in blockading that port.
The dispatches further announce that
the cruiser America, fitted out; in New
York, is useless on account of the fact that
she has no crew to work her, owing to the
failure of the Brazilian government of-
ficials to arrive at an understanding with
her American officers and crew, and that
the latter will not fight her on account of
these disagreements. It is also stated that
nearly all the Americans are either ashore
or going ashore with the intention of re-
turning to the United States as soon as
possible.
The Nictheroy Damaged.
Concerning the dynamite cruiser N icthe-
my, the dispatches received here from Rio
do Janeiro announce that she has been
damaged to such an extent as to be practi-
cally useless until placed in the hands of
skilled workmen, who will have to spend
a considerable time upon her before she is
again in fighting condition.
The machinery of the dynamite gun is
said to be out of order, and it is believed
that this is the work, directly or indirect-
ly, of friends of the insurgents, who, as al-
ready reported, have been busily at work
with the crews of the ships which were
signed from New York as well as with the
crews of the other vessels purchased by the
government of President Peixoto.
Some doubt is thrown on these state-
ments from Rio J aneiro by the fact that
the dispatches say, in *addition, that the
Nictheroy remains at. Pernambnco, while
previous dispatches received here have an-
nounced the departure of the Nictheroy
from Pernambuco for Bahia. and the fact
that President Peixoto had rendezvoused
his new fleet at Bahia, previous to starting
all his vessels for Rio de J aneiro with the
intention of crushing out the insurgent
fleet in the bay of Rio de J aneiro.
Benham’s Action Commended.
N0 confirmation or denial of the report
that the town of Nictheroy, in the bay of
Rio de Janeiro, has fallen into the hands
of the insurgents has been received up to
the time this dispatch is filed.
Americans here and the majority of the
foreigners us well indorse the action of
Admiral Benham, the United States com-
mander at Rio de J aueiro, in setting the
example to the fleets of other nations in
protecting the commerce of his country
from the dangers incurred by the fire of
the rebel ships in Brazilian waters.

said not to have recovered ire" the effects
of the energetic action of the bolted State.

Found a Hidden Treasure.
Wax/ruin, Mass, Feb. 3.—A hidden
treasure valued at several thousand dol-
lars, consisting of gold watches, Spanish
doubleons and jewelry, was found by
workmen in an old colonial hotel today.
A diamond stud of fine quality, weighing
over eight carats, with a number of an.
