Campbell. who left He gubernatorial
chair of Ohio in January, 1892, and has-
been' residing in this city most of the
time since, is in straightened financial
circumstances and is unable to meet a
judgment which has been pending
against him for some months.
After being sworn before Judge Bar-
rett of the supreme court he Was exam-
ined in supplementary proceedings as to
his ability to pay the judgment.
The judgment was secured last July by
the First National bank of Chicago for
$5,000, and was based on a promissory
note for that sum which he gave, and it
was indorsed by F. J. O’Connell, of Cold.
grove, Ohio, who had it discounted by
the First National bank of Chicago.
The bank has been unable to collect the
Amount of the note, which was given in
payment of ‘stock of the Ohio Mining
company. Since the judgment was se~
cured in July last $1,000 has been paid
upon it. Lawyers C. H. Strong and G. A.
Moses, who tried to collect the judgment,
for the bank, secured an order from the
court for the examination of the cx—gov-
crnor on Jan. 18 last, but he failed to ap.
pear then, as he Was in Washington ht-
tending to some important business.
His default was taken then, and the
next step would have been to have him
punished for contempt, but instead of
taking that proceeding the lawyers, at the
request of the ex-governor, consented to
the opening of the default, and gave him
an opportunity to answer, and he was ex-
amined.
Mr. Campbell testified that for 22 years
he resided in Hamilton, 0. He came to
this city after he’left the gubernatorial
chair, and has since been winding up
business which he had on hand while an
Ohio statesman. He resided with his
wife, two sons and two daughters on
Madison avenue.
He also testified that it was utterly im-
possible for him to pay the amount of the
judgment because of his poor financial
condition. He declared that on account
of his straitened circumstances he had
been compelled to take his eldest son from
college and have him enter into business
relations with himself. He asserted that
this was the only judgment standing
against him.
It is his determination to return to his
old home in Ohio about May next and re-
side there the rest of his days. '
The examination was adjourned until
Feb. 6, as Mr. Campbell was not feeling
well.
TELEPHONE INVENTION.
Based Upon an Entirely New Prin-
ciple in Accoustics.
READING, Pm, Jan. 29.—-A telephone in-
vention, that may turn out to be very im-
portant, in view of the approaching ex-
piration of some of the old patents on
telephones designed by Edison, Bell and
others, has just been perfected by Elias
Grofl, of Krlcks Mill, near this city. At
his request, a day or two ago, a number
of Grofl’s friends met him at the Cross
Keys hotel, to test and examine his in-
vention, which is said to be based upon
an entirely new principle to accoustics.
After numerous trials, which were _at~
tended with excellent results, it was de-
cided that the invention was of sufficient
importance to warrant Mr. Groff to apply
for apatent, which he will do. In the
meantime it will be withheld from the
public.
Not Called to Rome.
NEW YORK, Jan. ESL—An alleged cable
despatch from Rome, stating that Arch-
bishop Corrigan had been summoned to
Rome by the pope, having been published,
Father Connolly was seen at the arch-
bishop’s residence. “I have seen the pub-
lication to which you refer,” he said,
“and there is no foundation for it. No
communication has been received here of
that nature, and you can positively deny
it. If ArchbishOp Cor-rigan had been
summonedflto Rome, .. we would have
heard of it before this time.”
Resignatious to Be Called For.
WASHINGTON, J ah. 29.—It is semi-offi-
cially announced that between now and
the beginning of the next fiscal year,
July 2 next, the resignations, with possi-
bly a few exceptions, of all the old chiefs
of divisions in the treasury department
will be called for by Secretary Carlisle.
The first bureaus, it is said, that will
next receive attention are the internal
revenue bureau and comptroller of the
Currency’s office.
W'ant More Money.
ROME, Jan. 29.——Although the French
government has paid the Italian ambas-
sador in Paris 400,000 francs for the fam-
ilies of the Italian workmen killed at ~
Aigues-Mortes, Monotti Garibaldi’s com-
mittee has announced through the news—
papers that it will continue to collect
money for the relatives of the victims.
Third Victim of the Tragedy.
AUBURN, N. Y., Jan. 29.——The Kellar
infant in agms, which was shot by its
mother Thursday night, is dead, making
the third victim of the tragedy. Father,
mother and child were buried together.
The coroner’s jury found that the mother ,
committed the murders and suicide
while insane.
Syracuse \Vants the State Capitol.
SYRACUSE, N. Y., Jan. 29.—The Farm-
ers club of Onondaga county has adopted
resolutions requesting the senator and
assemblymen from this district to use
their influence to' secure the removal of
the state capitol from Albany to Syr
cuse. " -
Driven from Chicago.
BUFFALO, Jan. 29.—-—The police arrested
twenty-four tramps in one precinct yester-
day. Nearly all of them came from
Chicago and belong to the mob that was
driven out of that city recently. The city is
almost overrun with them and hundreds
have passed through here on their .way
east.
More Dynamite in Spain. —
MADRID, J an. 29.—-A dynamite cartridge
exploded yesterday between a church and
a large factory, in Esparraguera, province
of Catalonia, Nobody was injured. Sev-
eral conspicuous anarchists were arrested
yesterdry in Catalonia. and Valencia.
Three of the arrests were made in Barce-
Iona.

NEWARK, N. J., Jan. 29.—The, body of
a woman about 20 years of age was found
in the Morris canal, near the Summit
street bridge Saturday by some boys play-
ing along the bank. The police th that
