An attempt was made Tuesday to
wreck the express on the New England
road near Waterbury. Two large pieces
of rock were found between the rails.
Five engineers and the same number
of fireman were discharged by the
Philadelphia, Reading & New England
road yesterday. The reason given at
the company’ s oflice for the discharges
was that there was nothing for them to
do. Seven conductors were discharged
last week.
President Cleveland passed through
this city shortly after ’7 o’clock this
morning on a Special train consisting
of a combination car and an observation
car. The train was in charge of Con-
ductor Leander Searies. The Presi-
dent was on his way to the funeral of
his nephew, Henry E. Hastings, which
takes place 1n Hartford to-day.

HARTFORD, Conn, Jan. 24.—President
Cleveland is in this city to-day, to attend
the funeral of Henry C. Hastings, his
nephew, which will take place here this
afternoon at2 o’clock. Mr. Cleveland is
accompanied by his sister, Rose Cleve-
land, and a valet.
Mr. Hastings was the son of Mr. Cleve-
land’s sister. He was 33 years old, and
leaves a. widow and several children. His
death was caused by typhoid fever. At
the time of Mr. Cleveland’s last inaugur-
ation, Mr. Hastings spent a week at the
white house, as his uncle’s guest. The
president will return to W’ashington
Thursday.
Brooklyn Tnbernacle‘s Finances.
BROOKLYN, N. Y., J an. 24.—Mr. Wood,
ex-tréasurer of the Brooklyn tabernacle,
declares that there is nothing in the alle-
gations against him. He says he can ac—
count for every dollar which came into
his hands, and that he courts investiga—
tion. Dr. Talmage said to-dayz‘ “I don’t
believe the charges against Mr. Wood.
He has been a faithful, hard-working
friend of the church for many years. I
believe nothing evil against him.”
Mrs. Powe Granted a Divorce.
NEW HAVEN, Conn, J an. 24.—It is an—
nounced that a. divorce has been granted
to Mrs. Emanuel J. Powe, of Ansonia,
from William Powe, who is now in New
York city. The case was assigned for
trial in October, but Judge Hull put it
from the list and tried it in chambers.
The divorce was granted on the ground of
desertion. The case is particularly inter-
estIing, owing to the prominence of the
principals.
