William Haviland writes to the Stam-
' ford Advocate: “I understand that J.
J. Hampson. the champion fifty mile
walker of Connecticut, is in South Nor-
walk. I shouldlike to challenge him for
fifty miles fgr a purse of $50 a side."
J. Frai k Rider, a well known musi-
cian, died at his home on West avenue,
this city, this morning. Y He was recog-
nized in musical circles as possessing
rare talent as a. pianist and organist.
He had been in failing health for some
months. ' ‘
Judge Hammersley on Friday denied
the application of Carrie E. Tyrrell
for a divorce from- Wm. H. Tyrrell.
Says the N ews: She sought a decree on
the ground of habitual intemperance,
and also asked permission to assume
her maiden name, Carrie Ferris. The
evidence showed that the defendant
was in the habit of getting drunk. All
the witnesses said he was drunk a day
at a time. N one of them were willing
to swear that his sprees lasted for more
than a day. Judge Hammersley said
the'evidence was not sufficient. A man
who got drunk occasionally, for a day
at a time was not a habitual drunkard.
Some good citizens have been known
to go on occasional drunks. He there.
fore denied. the decree and Carrie must
remain Mrs. Tyrrell.They were married
July 3, 1888. Both parties to the suit
belong in South Norwalk.
