Very Grateful.
So grateful are the proprietors of
the Norwalk Boston store for the im‘
mense business of the past season in
spite of the dull times, that they wish
to show their appreciation of the pat-
ronage bestowed on them by distribut-
ing a large number of Christmas pres-
ents amongst their customers. In this
limited Space it would be impossible to
enumerate all the articles they intend
to give away, but amongst them are a
ton of coal, a barrel of flour, tw'o sow-
ing machines, a 56 piece tea set, a tur-
key, a ring, several pounds of tea and
coffee, several bags of flour, a ham, a
pair of lace curtains, a pair of portiere
curtains, a lamp, an oil painting, a
crayon portrait, a wool dress pattern,

ladies and Misses cloaks, several dol-

lars worth of sugar, muffs, fur capes,
kid gloves, umbrellas, neckties, suits
of underwear, and hundreds of other

An extraordinary example of what
human skill can produce in weaving a
textile fabric can be seen on exhibltion
at the Norwalk Boston Store. This is-
a copy of Stuart’s famous portrait of
George “’ashington, woven entirely on
the loom without printing or touching
up of any sort. It almost shakes one’s
credulity to be told that the work is
entirely the result of the weaver’s skill.
Yet such is the fact. This marvel, which
was one of the sensations of C icago, .
is composed of 600,000 threads of silk,
made on a Jacquard pattern, which re-
quired-25,000 cards, and which took the
labor of some of the best experts in the
world, using the finest appliances of
Lyons, two and onehalf years to pro-
duce. It cost $8,000 to make the first
copy of this masterpiece, and every ad,
ditional copy takesthree expert weav-
ers two and one-half month to manu-
facture. The delicate shading is ob-
tained by an ingenious use of three
looms, requiring the most careful man-
ipulation by the best experts in the
world. This wonder of the loom is
more than a mere curiosity. It is really
a work of art, and as such is worthy of
the closest study.
