held tomorrow evening in the South
Not-walk Congregational church. , The
pastor will preach a sermon on“A Heroic
Ancestry.”
John McCormick, while under the
influence, yesterday, had a talking
match with Mrs. Warm. In the course
of the heated discussion, John used vile
language, for which he was arrested.
’1 his morning he was fined $1 and costs
by Justice Barrett, and failing to set-
tle, accompanied Chief Vollmer to
Bridgeport jail.
Francis B. V'Vakeley, of Fairfield,who
had been taking the gold cure in this
city, and who was reported as missing,
and causing much worriment to his
friends and relatives, has finally been
located at the Keeley Institute in New
Haven. His case is a sad one indeed.
As a young man he was possessed of a
personality and accomplishments which
made for him hosts of friends and indi-
cated a promising future. One thing
and another, however, including the
death, in quick succession, of a dearly
loved son, his mother, wife and father,
led him, in the hope of forgetting his
troubles, to contract intemperate hab-
its. His disposition was of the kindli-
est, and he never was known to with-
hold sympathy for those in trouble, or
in his palmy days assistance for those
in distress.
“William,” exclaimed the nervous
wife of a South Main street merchant,
“there’s a burglar in the house; I’m
sure of it.” '
William rubbed his eyes and protest-
ed mildly that it was imagination.
“No. it isn’t. I heard a man down
stairs.”
So William took atbox of matches
and went‘down. To his‘ surprise his
wife’s suspicions were correct. Seeing
that he was unarmed, the burglar cov-
ered him with a revolver and became
quite sociable. ~
“Isn’t it rather late to be out of bed?”
he remarked. .
“A er-a-little bit.” replied William.

\Voolen Mills to Close.
ROCKVILLE, Conn, Dec. 16.—'lhe nulls
of the Warren woolen company at Staf-
ford Springs will stcp Dec. 2-3 indefinitely.
A number of other Stafford mills expect
to close soon, and a number of big woolen
mills in this city will close Jan. 1, unless
there is some improvement in business.

CHICAGO, Dec. 16.—\Vith the gallows
ready for his execution the noose made
and't-he rope tested George R. Intuit-r,
sentenced to hanged, and the sentence
uflirmed by the supreme 'court,
grantedarespite by Gov. Altgeld, until
January 12.
Le Blane Not Hanged. >
WINNIPEG, Man, Dec. 16.——Le Blane,
who was condemned to die yesterday for
the murder of John Wilson. was not
hanged. An order was received from Ot-
tawa commuting the death sentence to
fifteen years’ imprisonment.
