WASHINGTON, Dec. 14. —-The his battle
expected to take place in the harbor of
Rio Janeiro has begun at last.
The navy department has received the
following cable message from Captain

and Euchedas are in the possession of Ad-
miral Da Gama, the insurgent com-
mander. ‘
The former is well fortified and is con-
tinually firing upon the custom house and
naval arsenal with small arms.
, It is the general opinion in naval circles
in Washington that the rebels now have
the best of the fight.
LONDON, Dec. 14.—-Tho correspondent
of the Times in Rio Janeiro says that tho
Parahyba'arrests were made in view of
information found in the dispatches car-
ried by an ofiicer who was seized aboard a
British steamer in Rio harbor.
A dispatch from Buenos Ayres says that
the Aquidaban has returned to blockade
Rio :Janeiro.

LISBON, Dec. 14.——The British steamer
Nile, which sailed from Pernambuco,
Brazil, on Dec. 5, has arrived here.
Just before the N ile‘ sailed the govern-
ment had the fifteen insurgent officers
and the crew of. the guardship Parahyba,
seized in the harbor, carried ashore and
stood up to be shot by a party of soldiers.
The soldiers fired with great reluctance.
With the first volley they killed five. The
rest- of the prisoners shouted “long live
Hello!” The soldiers declined to fire again
and the rest of the marines are supposed
to be still alive.
At Bahia. and other ports, the men on
the Nile say, the revolution grows in favor.
The insurgents have been strenghtened
greatly by the accession of Admiral do
Gama and his friends.
A reign of terror dominates at Rio
Jaueiro. More than a thousand men of
different nationalities are misdng in the
city. Some of them are supposed to be in
.juii; Others are said to have been executed.
Double Tragedy Over a Love Afl‘nir.
DENVER, Dec. l4.—-Edward Haiifield,
jr., 23 years old, the wayward son of
Edward Hanfield, of Ashfield, Mass, yes-
terday shot and mortally wounded Miss
Ida Hall, the 18-year-old daughter of a
small restaurant keeper in this city, and
then killed himself. The tragedy occurred
in the apartments of the principal actor
and was occasioned by the girl informing
him that she was forbidden to see him
again. Hanfield came here from Mon-
treal where he was studying for a priest.
The Hall family came from Buflalo.
Big Wage Cut Proposed.
BEAVER FALLS, Pa,. Dec. 14.—Superin-
tendent Joseph Wrigley, of the Carnegie
mills here, who is preparing the new wage
scale that takes efifect Jan. 1, admits that
the cut in Wages will not be less than 40
per cent. on the total. The wages of
clerks and laborers will not be changed.
, Skilled workmen who are receiving $10 to
$50 per day Will be cut heavily. Nail mill
operators will be reduced from $2.50 to $2
per day. .

cialist Democratic Federation, has been li-
sued. It says, in substance, that it is the
duty of socialists in Great Britain to see

anarchy, measures are not taken that will '
infringe upon freedom of speech and free-
dom of meeting. .,

CAPE TOWN, Dec. i4.—-A dispatch dated
at Bulwayo on Dec. 8 says: Major Forbes
party have been obliged to retire on ac-
count of the strong resistance of Loben-
gula. Major Forbes is believed now to be
