Putnam Hose company is not repre-
sented on the new board of engineers.
. As the 9:30 train started to pull out
of the depotithis morning the draw
head pulled out of the baggage car
causing a short delay.
Constable Ireland last evening turned
over the barge Munn, which has been
, libeled by Stanley Loundes for salvage,
to the United States marshal.
Butler Lodge has appointed a com-
mittee to look after and assist the
needy during the winter. This is as it
shon d be and all other organizations
should follow suit.
W. A. Benedict 1s having his adjoin-
ing store on Washington street fitted
up with Turkish booths. Artist Wash-
burn has been engaged to paint a hand-
some Turkish scene on the wells, and
Mr. Benedict proposes to have the finest
Christmas display of any store in town.
At the meeting of the South Norwalk
fire department, in the parlors of Old
Well truck company, Edward V. Baker
was nominated for chief engineer, to
succeed John W. Wehle. First assist-
ant William Harford and second assist
antdCharles D. Taylor were re-nomin-
ate
When George Schaub opened his sa-
loon on Railroad Place this morning he
discovered that the place had been en-
tered and two overcoats, $1.50 in money
and a lot of cigars had been stolen.
How the buglars gained an entrance is
a mystery as the back door, which was
found open, is fastened by a spring
look from the inside and Mr. Sehaub
remembers locking it before retiring.
The theory of the police is that the
burglars secreted themselves 1n the sa-
loon and after Mr. Schaub retired they
ransacked the premises. One of the
overcoats stolen was the property of
Mr. Schaub and the other belonged to
his nephew John Schaub.
Among others at the East Norwalk
school fair on Tuesday evening were
two colored women, with umbrellas in
their hands. They were standing at
one of the tables upon which fancy ar-
ticles were displayed for sale. Russell
Morgan was sure that he saw them lift
articlles from the table and drop them
into their umbrellas. Be notified one
of the committee, but before they
could be apprehended the women had
managed to get out of the hall and es-
cape. A pretty good description' is bad
of them, and they may yet be arrested.
Several fancy articles were found mis-
sing from the table, and it is believed
that they were stolen by the women
mentioned.

In the superior court at Hartford. on
Wednesday, John Tyler, the negro,
pleaded guilty to burglary, and mur-
derous assault on Miss J ulia N 119s and
Miss Ennis st Pequonock on Oct. 18.
He was sentenced by Judge Hammer-
sley to eighteen years in state prison.
CCnstable Charles Stagg of Stratford,
met with an accident Wednesday after-
noon which will confine him to the
house for several days. While attend-
ing a horse it fell on him. One ankle
was sprained.
