TWeuty-flve Lien Lost in the Collision
on Lake Michigan.
SAND BEACH, Mich, Nov. 8.—-Tlio
second small boat containing 25 of the
cream of the propellers Albany and Phila-
delphia, which Were in collision and sank
during the night, capsized and all were
lost. Eleven bodies have been recovered
'by the life-saving crew at Point aux
Barques.
The Albany and Philadelphia, two of
.the largest freight boats on the lakes, col‘
lided ofl Point Aux Barques in a dense
fog and both sank shortly afterward in 200
feet of water. The Philadelphia. struck
the Albany head on, forward of No. 2
gangway. All hands got on 1hoard the
Philadelphia, and she towed the Albany
half an hour, when the latter sank. The
Philadelphia went down thirty minutes
after. Both crews got away in two small
boats. One of them with both captains
and twenty men reached shore at Point
aux Barques. ,
THE RETURNS AT WOODLEY.
Telephoned from the White House to
the President’s Country Seat.
WASHINGToN, Nov. 8.—The white house
was connected with the Western Union
and the United Press bulletin wires, and
the operators were on duty at the execu-
tive mansion all night to receive the bul-
letins of results in the several states.
More important dispatches were transmit-
ted'by Private Secretary Thurber through
the telephone to the president at lVood~
ley, who was thus put in full posession of
the results before retiring for the night.
Mr. Cleveland had gone ,out to his coun-
try home as usual soon after the adjourn-
ment of the cabinet meeting, and several
of his official family drove out there in the
evening and received and discussed with
him the news. Their privacy was not dis-
turbed. ...~-.

Lynn‘s l'IIayor llIay Lose an Eye From

BOSTON, Nov. 8.——Mayor Elihu B.
_Hayes, of Lynn, met with a peculiar acci-
dent in Lynn Monday evening. The re-
publicans of the city held a rally in the
Lynn theatre, and after the meeting the
mayor was discussing politics with Con-
grossman McCall of Winchester.
The congressman was smoking a cigar
and, becoming excited, he removed it
from his mouth and in one of his gestures
stuck the lighted end into the mayor’s
right eye.
The injury is serious as well as painful,
and there is a chance that Mr. Hayes will
lose the use of the eye.
Senator Lodge Severely Bruised.
LYNN, Mass, Nov. 8.—Senator Henry
Cabot Lodge, after addressing a meeting
at Gloucester Monday night, started in a.
carriage with his son-inzlaw, A. P. Gard-
ner, for Hamilton to spend the night.
Near Ipswich their’horses ran away and
the senator and Mr. Gardner were thrown
out and severely bruised. They walked
eight miles to Essex when another carriage
was procured.
May Start “Gin Drug Stores.”
HARTFORD, Conn., Nov. 8. — James
Farrel, a. former New Britain saloon keeper,
has made application to the county com-
missioner for a druggists license to sell
liquor. It is said that he has bought out
a drug store and there are evidences of
starting up of “gin drug stores” at New
Britain, East Hartford, Manchester, Berlin
and other no-lic‘ense towns in this vicinity.
Lagrippe Raging in Alaska.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 8.—-Lagrippe is
raging with great virulence in Alaska, ac-
cording to a. report received at the treasury
department from Captain Henley, of the
revenue cutter Bear. The crew of the
Bear have been seriously weakened by the
Elisease, seven of them having it in serious
orm.
Tour of the Tin Pail “Growler-3’.
NEWPORT, R. 1., Nov. 8.-—The tin pail
“Growler,” which. is on a tour of the
country, having started from Deadwood,
S. D., has reached the office of the Adams
express in this city where another tag
was added to the already large collection.
It has been forwarded to Boston.
Pushing the Tariff Measure.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 8.—One of the ma—
jority members of the committee on ways
and means this morning said that he fully
expected the majority would have the new
tariff bill so far advanced that it might
be submitted to the minority members at
it called meeting within three weeks.
Big Fire at Rankin, Pa.
BRADDOCK, Pa, Nov. 8.—Anotl:er big
lire atRankin yesterday burned out two
thriving industries, McBride &. Rogers’,
planing mill, at a loss of $30,000, and Soi-
son & Co.’s fire-brick works; loss almost
$20,000. The fire started in the lumber
yard stable.

Eighteen Lives Lost.
NORTH BAY, Ont., Nov. 8.—Word has
reached here that the steamer Fraser was
burned yesterday near Goose Island, on
Lake Nipissing, about 25 miles west of
here, and that 18 lives were lost.

NEW HAVEN, Conn.,Nov. 8.——The foot-
ball game between the freshmen classes of
Yale and Columbia colleges yesterday at
the Yale field resulted in favor of the Yale
players by a score of 32 to 0.

trial of Prendergast for the murder or
