' SOUTH NORWALK.
The Red Men of this city go to Dan-
bury tonight to participate in the
ghost dance in that city. As a genuine
ghost dance takes several hours the
braves will not return until to-morrow
morning.
Fred. Berg, of Stamford,_who was
struck by the switch-engine in this city
some three weeks ago, is able to be
about again with the aid of crutches. It
will be some time, however, before 'he
recovers entirely from his injuries.
Edward Beard of the Lock Works
has one of the finest saddle horses
in town. It is a coal black charger
and when mounted and dashing off
after a good digestion and appetite
Beard reminds one of some gallant
cavalry leader of ye war time.
A representative of the Thomson-
Houston company has been in the city
several days wiring car No. 1, of the
Tramway company. It was given a
trial this morning and proved satis-
factory. The new box car will be
wired and placed on the road as soon
as possible.
While fishing on the railroad dock
yesterday, James Dougherty fell off in-
to the water and would have been
drowned had it not been for the timely
assistance cf Ed.Sisserson,who let him
self down on one of the spiles and caught
young Dougherty and pulled him out.
William Monahanfell off of one of
- Crofutt’s wagons at the corner of South
Main and Haviland streets yesterday
afternoon and cut a, deep gash in his
head. He was picked up by Joseph
Klinefelter, and with the assistance of
‘ several bystanders, placed in the wagon
and driven home.
In the Daniel J. Hanlon ease yester-
day the defence submitted their case
without examining witnesses. and J us-
tice Barrett found him guilty and im-
posed a fine of $25 and costs. An ap-
peal was taken and J. J. Hanlon fur-
nished $200 bonds for his appearance
before the Superior Court.

On account of numerous assaults and
robberies many Bridgeport Citizens
have secured permissmn to carry revol-
vers.
Scarlet fever prevails at Winsted in
an almost epidemic form. There are
over 25 cases, but the disease is not
frequently fatal.
A sneak thief or thieves entered the
residence of Horace Nichols on Court-
land street Bridgeport and srolc two
overcoats valued at $40 each from the
hall rack. . v
This afternoon in Hartford willbegin
the hearing before the railroad com-
missioners in regard to the troubles
connected with the union railway sta-
tion there. .
University deny the reports that an an-
ti-lady student club had been organized
for the purpose of driving the members
of the gentler sex from the college.
The slaghtering of hogs at the Bridge-
port town farm begins to-day. There
are 267 pigs in condition to kill at the
farm beside about 200 young pigs which
will be fit to convert into pork before
spring, .
Lighthouse steamers arrived yester-
day with the framework for the new
breakwater lighthouse at Bridgeport.
It is of iron and will be put up imme-
diately. Supt. Navarr has charge of
the work. ,
At an adjourned meeting of the soci-
ety of the church of the Redeemer, in
Hartford, last evening, the society’s
committee was authorized by an unani-
mous vote to extend a call to the Rev.
Frederick W. Perkins o'f Tufts College.
The panic breeds a paradox. ' The ca-
lamity shrieker maintains that the times
are so hard that poor people can’t afford
to live, while the undertakers complain
of a dullness of trade that shows few

Commissioners Dunham of New Ha-
ven county and Houlihan of Fairficld
county have been appointed a commit-
mittee.together with Surveyor Scofield,
to examine Bennett’s bridge over the
Housatonic river and report on the need
of a new span.
The police after investigating the se-
ries roberies which have been perpetra-
ted on the Yale campus have found evi-
dence enough to convince them that the
thefts for the most part have been com-
mitted. One student has confessed to
having taken an overcoat.
Papers were served Wednesday in a
suit for $25,000 against each of the se-
lectmen of Portland, in behalf of Fred
Hall White of Brooklyn, N. Y., 9 years
of age. The Whites own a summer resi-
dence in Portland and the selectmen
have cut a road through their property.
The Central New England Brick ex-
change held a meeting at their office on
Church street, New Britain, yesterday
afternoon and elected the following of-
ficers: President to fill vacancy caused
by the death of C. P. Merwin,M. E. Ja-
cobs of Berlin; vice-president William
